Alright, I'm back, sorry for the absence, I've been on vacation since July 24. Anyways, just a few misc things that have happened in the past week(probably old at this point, but w/e). All this is just quick info because most of its old, but w/e. I can find sources if neccessary.
-GTA4 has been delayed to 2008, expected release date is April 08. Apparently, they are having trouble launching both versions of the title at the same time, not saying whether the 360 or PS3 is holding it up. 360 fanboys claim the PS3 version is holding it back because the PS3 is so hard to design for(and all trailers have been done using the 360 version, shows more progress). PS3 fanboys claim the 360 version is holding it up, say they are having trouble fitting the game to a DVD9
-Lair receives a 5.5/10 rating from EGM, is delayed til Sept. Lair is a 1st party Sony game, expected to release in August as a blockbuster title. So far, 3 major publishers have posted mixed reviews for the game - EGM ranked it a 5.5/10, GameInformer ranked it a 3.75/5, and Play(UK mag, not the US Play) gave it a 9/10. Lair is unique because it uses the 6axis motion to fly the dragons instead of analog sticks, but has received mixed reviews. EGM hated the controls, Play loved them, GI hated them until they got used to it, then loved them. Factor 5 claims the delay is to fix the online leader boards, but many speculate its to allow analog controls
-Bioshock, the 360's summer blockbuster, received a 10/10 from the official XBox magazine(surprise, surprise). No other reviews yet.
-The 360 appears to be slated for a price drop on August 12 - a month exactly from the PS3 price drop. Like the PS3 price drop, the 360 price drop was first seen in a retailer flyer, showing the premium having a $50 cut to $350. No other models were shown as having a cut. Also like the PS3 price drop, MS has denied this info.

-Some 360 games going to start requiring a HDD in order to bypass DVD9 limitations. Call of Duty 4 will be the first in this category. Disc space, whether you want to acknowledge it or not, has been an issue with many 360 games lately, PGR4 and Mass Effect being 2 games that have criticized the limitations of DVD9.
-Shin Sangoku Musuo 5(Dynasty Warriors 6) has been announced as a PS3 exclusive in Japan, but will release for the 360 and PS3 in the US. DW6 is set for a 2007 release in Japan.
-Sales numbers for the past week
US
Wii - 95,171 (-3%)
PS3 - 43,498 (-4%)
360 - 34,174 (+5%)
#1 selling game was Guitar Hero Encore(PS2), followed by NCAA 08(360)
Japan
Wii - 74,320 (-10%)
PS3 - 37,524 (+187%)
360 - 3,555 (+27%)
#1 selling game was Mario Party 8(Wii), followed by Everybody's Golf 5(Hot Shots Golf 5)(PS3)
In both markets, despite Nintendo increasing Wii shipments, Wii sales dropped. This is peculiar - especially in Japan, where 2 major titles(Mario Party 8 and Gundam) launched in the same week. The only thing I can think of is that a lot of people bought it when Dragon Quest launched.
In the US, the PS3 has been pretty stagnant around 45K since the price drop, as has been the 360, right around 35K. However, I would expect the 360 sales to jump a bit after the rumored price drop takes effect.
In Japan, both the PS3 and he 360 saw significant sales boosts. The PS3's hardware sales sky rocketed nearly 200%. The Wii only outsells it at a rate of about 21 now(as opposed to the near 71 last week). This is without a doubt due to the release of Hot Shots Golf 5 - the most anticipated title for the PS3 thus far in Japan. HSG5 itself sold nearly 200K copies, 20% of the PS3 user base in Japan. The 360 also had a boost in sales by 25%. This is due to the release of Oblivion. This is also peculiar, as Western RPGs have never been really successful in Japan, while Oblivion ranked in the top 10 for software sales. Oblivion is set to release on the PS3 next week in Japan.
PS3 has also finally hit the 4m sales mark, world wide, with a pretty even distribution throughout all 3 major regions.

Also, today is the 20th birthday of Solid Snake, the original Metal Gear was released on the MSX 20 years ago today. To commemorate the event, they are having a MGS anniversary party in Japan. Expect real, direct feed game play footage to come from that. Also, HK is expected to announce 2 new Metal Gear products as well.

[b813d8a6e60]Sales numbers are in for the week of July 14[/b813d8a6e60]
[quote813d8a6e60]7-July
DS 101,958
Wii 69,510
PSP 51,311
360 34,623
PS3 17,770
14-Jul
Wii 76,394 +10%
DS 97,404 -5.00%
PS3 41,005 +131%
PSP 50,890 -1%
Xbox 360 35,084 +1%[/quote813d8a6e60]
Well, the big news in these numbers is that for the first time in who knows how long, the PS3 has outsold the 360. The Nintendo Wii is still outselling it, albeit only at a ratio of 1.71 as opposed to the almost 61 it was just 2 weeks ago. This is expected though, with the price drop announced last Monday. This is a needed boost for Sony, as the Wii is now outselling the PS3 7 to 1 in Japan(and the 360 a whopping 31 to 1)
I would imagine the PS3's sales will remain stagnant around 35K-45K until August, with the release of Lair, Warhawk, and Madden 08. 360 should also benefit from Madden, although I don't think they have much else until the big September month. Wii might see a spike with the release of Mario Strikers at the end of July.
The 360 is still dominating console software sales, with the Wii just slightly behind. The PS3 software sales are at a bit more then half of the Wii and 360.

Today was pretty big for MS, Peter Moore, the corporate vice president of Microsoft's electronic entertainment division, has decided to to step down and run Electronic Art's sports division. While this may seem like an odd move, Peter Moore considers himself to be an avid sports fan.
The opening at EA was he result of a change in the EA line up, the switched the company to have 4 divisions, creating an opening in the Sports Division.
Peter Moore began working at Microsoft after leaving Sega of America. He greatly contributed to the 360, especially with establishing relations with Japanese developers. He will be replaced by Dan Mattrick.

GameInformer printed an article in this months magazine indicating that a yet another new PS3 SKU could be in development. The new model would retail for $399 and would come with a 40GB hard drive and no backwards compatibility. This would seem to go against Sony's claim that there will be only 1 permanent SKU.

[b813d8a6e60]Sony price gouging in Europe?[/b813d8a6e60]
Last week, the US received a price drop of $100 for the PS3. Europe did not, they instead kept the price the same but added an extra controller, Resistance, and Motorstorm. This disappointed fans across Europe, and in some locations, stores dropped the price anyways to appease fans. The PS3 costs roughly $400USD more in Europe then it does in the US, and now critics are saying that Sony is gouging prices in Europe so they can sell the console cheaper in the US. Sony has not responded to the claims.

[b813d8a6e60]The numbers are in! Console sales for the week of 7/1-7/7[/b813d8a6e60]
VGChartz.com has posted the hardware sales number for this past week, here they are
[quote813d8a6e60] DS Wii PSP X360 PS3
Total 314250 201097 134278 57588 53951
NAmer 101998 69510 51311 34623 17770

Other 87570 59607 47283 19987 24594[/quote813d8a6e60]
Wii is still dominating, but its only out selling the PS3/360 by 4 to 1 now(was 6 to 1 last week). 360 is still beating out the PS3, but the gap has fallen to about 4000 units. Its selling nearly double the PS3 in North America, though.
Also, this is before the PS3 price cut was announced, so sales might jump for next week.

Also, theres a rumor floating around now that the 360 version of GTA4 might span multiple discs, meaning you would have to periodically swap discs. The PS3 version would only be one disc, as BR can hold 5.5 times the amount that DVDs can. Will post more if its confirmed.

[b813d8a6e60]60GB PS3 to be discontinued once the stock is out[/b813d8a6e60]
Earlier this week, Sony dropped the price of its PS3 to $499 and introduced a new 80GB bundle for $599. As it turns out, there was actually no price cut. The 60GB model was cut in price to clear out the stock of 60GB so Sony could replace it with the $599 80GB PS3. Once the 60GB is out of stock, there will be only one $599 80GB PS3. This was revealed today by SCEE(Sony Europe) president David Reeves in an E3 interview.
[quote813d8a6e60]GI.BIZ How concerned are you about possible criticisms that you should have given European consumers what SCEA has given US consumers, i.e. the option to pay a lower price?
Reeves Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game. All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.
So once the 60GB is gone, that will be the end of the 60GB then?
In America, yes. [/quote813d8a6e60]

[b813d8a6e60]Sony confirms PS3 price drop, and new bundle package[/b813d8a6e60]
Despite denying rumors of a price drop for the PS3 earlier this week, Sony has come out and officially confirmed a Sony PS3 price drop. The 60GB model dropped to $499 USD.
Sony also announced a bundle package and 80GB model. The 80 GB model will come bundled with Motorstorm and also uses software emulation for backwards compatibility instead of hardware emulation as the current Japanese and American PS3s do(the EU PS3s already replaced hard emulation with soft emulation from launch). This new bundle package, coming in August, will retail for $599.
Sony also announced a price drop in Europe as well, although the details of that cut will not be released until their E3 press conference on Thursday.
This price cut takes place immediately, although many stores have been slow to update this. Best Buy, Circuit City, and Amazon have all updated their prices, but are among the few. The price cut is already having astronomical results. On Amazon, PS3 sales have increased by 2800%. The PS3 has overtaken the Nintendo Wii on Amazon.com as the best seller in the video games category.
When interviewed by IGN, Microsoft commented "We're not surprised by Sony's reaction to the market. We'll see if it makes a difference. It's interesting to note that they've significantly dropped their price in the first eight months while Xbox 360 has continued to sell well at our launch price for more than a year and a half. We're right where we want to be right now -- it's all about choice and bringing the best games and entertainment to homes around the world". Despite their response, industry analysts expect MS to drop the price in during the E3 conference on Wednesday.

[b813d8a6e60]Microsoft falls short of June 30th sales goal[/b813d8a6e60]
Microsoft's sales goal was to have 12 million XBox 360's sold by June 30th. Reports are now in, and indicated MS has fallen short of their goal by 400,000 consoles, selling only 11.6 million. MS officials say they are disappointed by this, but are confident their new warranties along with several blockbuster titles due out soon will help drive sales forward.
[b813d8a6e60]360 Virtua Fighter 5 to have online play[/b813d8a6e60]
Sega of Europe and Sega of America have confirmed that the 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5(due out this fall) will indeed have online Versus mode. The PS3 version of Virtua Fighter 5, released last spring as a timed exclusive, was released without online multiplayer. At the time Sega said that there is no possible way to have an online frame based fighter that stays true to the arcade counterpart, and would not be online for any version. Sega claimed that lag would cause loss of animation frames, changing the games technical mechanics.
Once again, PS3 owners get screwed.
[b813d8a6e60]Microsofts 3 year warranty extension to cost more then $1billion[/b813d8a6e60]
Yesterday, Microsoft extended the 360 warranty from 12 months to 3 years. They also offered to repay all 360 owners who have paid for 360 repairs in the past. This warranty only deals with hardware issues regard the 'Red Ring of Death', so you should still buy a warranty if you are worried about other issues. This policy change is expected to set MS back $1 billion, adding more to their gaming division's deficit of $5 billion
[b813d8a6e60]Sony denies price cut, despite more retailers confirming the $499 price drop[/b813d8a6e60]
Rumors spread like wildfire yesterday of a PS3 priced drop to $499. It all sprouted from a Circuit City ad stating the PS3 would be cut to $499. Sony is denying that there will be a price cut, and that these were all rumors. The President of Sony, Ryuji Chubachi, was quoted, saying "At present we have no plans [to cut the PS3's price]." Despite this, other big name retailers, such as Best Buy and Target, have confirmed that there will be a price drop the same week as Circuit City.
So no OFFICIAL news on a price drop, but more and more retailers are confirming it. My guess is that Sony doesn't want people to stop buying PS3s for $600 until they officially unveil the price cut.

[b813d8a6e60]Microsoft Extends Manufacturer warranty to 3 years, offers to reimburse those who have paid for repairs[/b813d8a6e60]
Peter Moore sent a letter out today addressing the Ring of Death issues and Microsoft's stance on the matter. This no doubt came from DailyTech's recent report that indicated up to 33% had hardware failing issues. [quote813d8a6e60]To our Xbox Community
You’ve spoken, and we’ve heard you. Good service and a good customer experience are areas of the business that we care deeply about. And frankly, we’ve not been doing a good enough job.
Some of you have expressed frustration with the customer experiences you have had with Xbox 360; frustration with having to return your console for service after receiving the general hardware error message on the console.
The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles have had a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out. But when anyone questions the reliability of our product, or our commitment to our customers, it’s something I take very seriously.
We have been following this issue closely, and with on-going testing have identified several factors that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. To address this issue, and as part of our ongoing work, we have already made certain improvements to the console.
We are also implementing some important policy changes intended to keep you in the game, worry-free.
As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge -- including shipping -- for three years from the console’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience.
If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize. We are taking responsibility and are making these changes to ensure that every Xbox 360 owner continues to have a great experience.
This will take a few days to roll out globally, and I appreciate your continued patience as we launch this program. I’ve posted an FAQ that should address some additional questions, and we’ll update it over the next few days.
I want to thank you, on behalf of all us at Microsoft, for your loyalty.[/quote813d8a6e60]
