Alright, since it seems I only come here now to spam gaming news, I decided to keep it all in one topic so those uninterested don't have to skip over like a bajillion of my topics lol

Anyways, heres the latest from EGN(Excel's Gaming News XD)

[b1992972cc9]08/06/07[/b1992972cc9]

I'm a big retro gamer, so I thought today I would bring you some big news in the retro gaming community.

Sonic X-treme is a forgotten Sonic title that fell victim to just about everything that could possibly go wrong when developing a game. Sega Technical Institute(a US based developer) began work on the project in the early 90s. At the time, STI was known for its work in Sonic 2 and Comix Zone. In the original planning stages, the game was to be for the Genesis. Later, Sonic X-treme was moved to the Genesis add on known as the 32X, and then, after acknowledging that the 32X didn't have the power needed to realize the teams ambition, it was finally moved to the Sega Saturn platform. A PC port was also planned.

Sonic X-treme would be the first true 3D Sonic game. The player would take control of Sonic, Knuckles, Tales, and Tiara, each with their own type of stages designed to take advantage of their abilities. The game would also feature boss battles that used the NiGHTS(another popular Saturn game) boss battle system. A separate team was hired to do the boss battles.

Soon, the project collapsed. The 2 teams were fighting for resources and uncoordinated. The Saturn itself was notoriously difficult to design for, only complicating the mater further. The game was delayed time and time again. Finally, the original director was replaced, and when the new team failed to make any progress, the game was canceled.

So what made me bring this up? There were rumors floating around on the 'net that there was a CD of the games early build. Recently, this proto type game CD containing an early build of the game was sold on eBay for $3000. On July 18, the demo was released to the public via various torrent sites. No group took responsibility for the release, and all the readme file said was "Home of the Obscure". This is pretty big, Sonic X-Treme was one of the most anticipate Saturn titles, and many have been hoping for this leak for about 10 years now.

Here is an old gameplay video released some time ago to show off the games engine, while the game was still in development. This is the PC version.

[b813d8a6e60]08/03/07[/b813d8a6e60]

Alright, I'm back, sorry for the absence, I've been on vacation since July 24. Anyways, just a few misc things that have happened in the past week(probably old at this point, but w/e). All this is just quick info because most of its old, but w/e. I can find sources if neccessary.

-GTA4 has been delayed to 2008, expected release date is April 08. Apparently, they are having trouble launching both versions of the title at the same time, not saying whether the 360 or PS3 is holding it up. 360 fanboys claim the PS3 version is holding it back because the PS3 is so hard to design for(and all trailers have been done using the 360 version, shows more progress). PS3 fanboys claim the 360 version is holding it up, say they are having trouble fitting the game to a DVD9

-Lair receives a 5.5/10 rating from EGM, is delayed til Sept. Lair is a 1st party Sony game, expected to release in August as a blockbuster title. So far, 3 major publishers have posted mixed reviews for the game - EGM ranked it a 5.5/10, GameInformer ranked it a 3.75/5, and Play(UK mag, not the US Play) gave it a 9/10. Lair is unique because it uses the 6axis motion to fly the dragons instead of analog sticks, but has received mixed reviews. EGM hated the controls, Play loved them, GI hated them until they got used to it, then loved them. Factor 5 claims the delay is to fix the online leader boards, but many speculate its to allow analog controls

-Bioshock, the 360's summer blockbuster, received a 10/10 from the official XBox magazine(surprise, surprise). No other reviews yet.

-The 360 appears to be slated for a price drop on August 12 - a month exactly from the PS3 price drop. Like the PS3 price drop, the 360 price drop was first seen in a retailer flyer, showing the premium having a $50 cut to $350. No other models were shown as having a cut. Also like the PS3 price drop, MS has denied this info.
SOURCE CheapAssGamer.com

-Some 360 games going to start requiring a HDD in order to bypass DVD9 limitations. Call of Duty 4 will be the first in this category. Disc space, whether you want to acknowledge it or not, has been an issue with many 360 games lately, PGR4 and Mass Effect being 2 games that have criticized the limitations of DVD9.

-Shin Sangoku Musuo 5(Dynasty Warriors 6) has been announced as a PS3 exclusive in Japan, but will release for the 360 and PS3 in the US. DW6 is set for a 2007 release in Japan.

-Sales numbers for the past week
US
Wii - 95,171 (-3%)
PS3 - 43,498 (-4%)
360 - 34,174 (+5%)
#1 selling game was Guitar Hero Encore(PS2), followed by NCAA 08(360)

Japan
Wii - 74,320 (-10%)
PS3 - 37,524 (+187%)
360 - 3,555 (+27%)
#1 selling game was Mario Party 8(Wii), followed by Everybody's Golf 5(Hot Shots Golf 5)(PS3)

In both markets, despite Nintendo increasing Wii shipments, Wii sales dropped. This is peculiar - especially in Japan, where 2 major titles(Mario Party 8 and Gundam) launched in the same week. The only thing I can think of is that a lot of people bought it when Dragon Quest launched.

In the US, the PS3 has been pretty stagnant around 45K since the price drop, as has been the 360, right around 35K. However, I would expect the 360 sales to jump a bit after the rumored price drop takes effect.

In Japan, both the PS3 and he 360 saw significant sales boosts. The PS3's hardware sales sky rocketed nearly 200%. The Wii only outsells it at a rate of about 21 now(as opposed to the near 71 last week). This is without a doubt due to the release of Hot Shots Golf 5 - the most anticipated title for the PS3 thus far in Japan. HSG5 itself sold nearly 200K copies, 20% of the PS3 user base in Japan. The 360 also had a boost in sales by 25%. This is due to the release of Oblivion. This is also peculiar, as Western RPGs have never been really successful in Japan, while Oblivion ranked in the top 10 for software sales. Oblivion is set to release on the PS3 next week in Japan.

PS3 has also finally hit the 4m sales mark, world wide, with a pretty even distribution throughout all 3 major regions.

Also, today is the 20th birthday of Solid Snake, the original Metal Gear was released on the MSX 20 years ago today. To commemorate the event, they are having a MGS anniversary party in Japan. Expect real, direct feed game play footage to come from that. Also, HK is expected to announce 2 new Metal Gear products as well.

[b813d8a6e60]Sales numbers are in for the week of July 14[/b813d8a6e60]

[quote813d8a6e60]7-July
DS 101,958
Wii 69,510
PSP 51,311
360 34,623
PS3 17,770

14-Jul
Wii 76,394 +10%
DS 97,404 -5.00%
PS3 41,005 +131%
PSP 50,890 -1%
Xbox 360 35,084 +1%[/quote813d8a6e60]

Well, the big news in these numbers is that for the first time in who knows how long, the PS3 has outsold the 360. The Nintendo Wii is still outselling it, albeit only at a ratio of 1.71 as opposed to the almost 61 it was just 2 weeks ago. This is expected though, with the price drop announced last Monday. This is a needed boost for Sony, as the Wii is now outselling the PS3 7 to 1 in Japan(and the 360 a whopping 31 to 1)

I would imagine the PS3's sales will remain stagnant around 35K-45K until August, with the release of Lair, Warhawk, and Madden 08. 360 should also benefit from Madden, although I don't think they have much else until the big September month. Wii might see a spike with the release of Mario Strikers at the end of July.

The 360 is still dominating console software sales, with the Wii just slightly behind. The PS3 software sales are at a bit more then half of the Wii and 360.

[b813d8a6e60]MS VP of Entertainment Peter Moore moves to EA Sports[/b813d8a6e60]

Today was pretty big for MS, Peter Moore, the corporate vice president of Microsoft's electronic entertainment division, has decided to to step down and run Electronic Art's sports division. While this may seem like an odd move, Peter Moore considers himself to be an avid sports fan.

The opening at EA was he result of a change in the EA line up, the switched the company to have 4 divisions, creating an opening in the Sports Division.

Peter Moore began working at Microsoft after leaving Sega of America. He greatly contributed to the 360, especially with establishing relations with Japanese developers. He will be replaced by Dan Mattrick.

GameInformer printed an article in this months magazine indicating that a yet another new PS3 SKU could be in development. The new model would retail for $399 and would come with a 40GB hard drive and no backwards compatibility. This would seem to go against Sony's claim that there will be only 1 permanent SKU.

[b813d8a6e60]Sony price gouging in Europe?[/b813d8a6e60]
Last week, the US received a price drop of $100 for the PS3. Europe did not, they instead kept the price the same but added an extra controller, Resistance, and Motorstorm. This disappointed fans across Europe, and in some locations, stores dropped the price anyways to appease fans. The PS3 costs roughly $400USD more in Europe then it does in the US, and now critics are saying that Sony is gouging prices in Europe so they can sell the console cheaper in the US. Sony has not responded to the claims.

[b813d8a6e60]The numbers are in! Console sales for the week of 7/1-7/7[/b813d8a6e60]

VGChartz.com has posted the hardware sales number for this past week, here they are
[quote813d8a6e60] DS Wii PSP X360 PS3
Total 314250 201097 134278 57588 53951
NAmer 101998 69510 51311 34623 17770
Japan 124682 71980 35684 2978 11587
Other 87570 59607 47283 19987 24594[/quote813d8a6e60]

Wii is still dominating, but its only out selling the PS3/360 by 4 to 1 now(was 6 to 1 last week). 360 is still beating out the PS3, but the gap has fallen to about 4000 units. Its selling nearly double the PS3 in North America, though.

Also, this is before the PS3 price cut was announced, so sales might jump for next week.

Source
http//www.vgchartz.com/news/news.php?id=419

Also, theres a rumor floating around now that the 360 version of GTA4 might span multiple discs, meaning you would have to periodically swap discs. The PS3 version would only be one disc, as BR can hold 5.5 times the amount that DVDs can. Will post more if its confirmed.

[b813d8a6e60]60GB PS3 to be discontinued once the stock is out[/b813d8a6e60]

Earlier this week, Sony dropped the price of its PS3 to $499 and introduced a new 80GB bundle for $599. As it turns out, there was actually no price cut. The 60GB model was cut in price to clear out the stock of 60GB so Sony could replace it with the $599 80GB PS3. Once the 60GB is out of stock, there will be only one $599 80GB PS3. This was revealed today by SCEE(Sony Europe) president David Reeves in an E3 interview.

[quote813d8a6e60]GI.BIZ How concerned are you about possible criticisms that you should have given European consumers what SCEA has given US consumers, i.e. the option to pay a lower price?

Reeves Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game. All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.

So once the 60GB is gone, that will be the end of the 60GB then?

In America, yes. [/quote813d8a6e60]

[b813d8a6e60]Sony confirms PS3 price drop, and new bundle package[/b813d8a6e60]

Despite denying rumors of a price drop for the PS3 earlier this week, Sony has come out and officially confirmed a Sony PS3 price drop. The 60GB model dropped to $499 USD.

Sony also announced a bundle package and 80GB model. The 80 GB model will come bundled with Motorstorm and also uses software emulation for backwards compatibility instead of hardware emulation as the current Japanese and American PS3s do(the EU PS3s already replaced hard emulation with soft emulation from launch). This new bundle package, coming in August, will retail for $599.

Sony also announced a price drop in Europe as well, although the details of that cut will not be released until their E3 press conference on Thursday.

This price cut takes place immediately, although many stores have been slow to update this. Best Buy, Circuit City, and Amazon have all updated their prices, but are among the few. The price cut is already having astronomical results. On Amazon, PS3 sales have increased by 2800%. The PS3 has overtaken the Nintendo Wii on Amazon.com as the best seller in the video games category.

When interviewed by IGN, Microsoft commented "We're not surprised by Sony's reaction to the market. We'll see if it makes a difference. It's interesting to note that they've significantly dropped their price in the first eight months while Xbox 360 has continued to sell well at our launch price for more than a year and a half. We're right where we want to be right now -- it's all about choice and bringing the best games and entertainment to homes around the world". Despite their response, industry analysts expect MS to drop the price in during the E3 conference on Wednesday.

[b813d8a6e60]Microsoft falls short of June 30th sales goal[/b813d8a6e60]

Microsoft's sales goal was to have 12 million XBox 360's sold by June 30th. Reports are now in, and indicated MS has fallen short of their goal by 400,000 consoles, selling only 11.6 million. MS officials say they are disappointed by this, but are confident their new warranties along with several blockbuster titles due out soon will help drive sales forward.

[b813d8a6e60]360 Virtua Fighter 5 to have online play[/b813d8a6e60]

Sega of Europe and Sega of America have confirmed that the 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5(due out this fall) will indeed have online Versus mode. The PS3 version of Virtua Fighter 5, released last spring as a timed exclusive, was released without online multiplayer. At the time Sega said that there is no possible way to have an online frame based fighter that stays true to the arcade counterpart, and would not be online for any version. Sega claimed that lag would cause loss of animation frames, changing the games technical mechanics.

Once again, PS3 owners get screwed.

[b813d8a6e60]Microsofts 3 year warranty extension to cost more then $1billion[/b813d8a6e60]

Yesterday, Microsoft extended the 360 warranty from 12 months to 3 years. They also offered to repay all 360 owners who have paid for 360 repairs in the past. This warranty only deals with hardware issues regard the 'Red Ring of Death', so you should still buy a warranty if you are worried about other issues. This policy change is expected to set MS back $1 billion, adding more to their gaming division's deficit of $5 billion

[b813d8a6e60]Sony denies price cut, despite more retailers confirming the $499 price drop[/b813d8a6e60]

Rumors spread like wildfire yesterday of a PS3 priced drop to $499. It all sprouted from a Circuit City ad stating the PS3 would be cut to $499. Sony is denying that there will be a price cut, and that these were all rumors. The President of Sony, Ryuji Chubachi, was quoted, saying "At present we have no plans [to cut the PS3's price]." Despite this, other big name retailers, such as Best Buy and Target, have confirmed that there will be a price drop the same week as Circuit City.

So no OFFICIAL news on a price drop, but more and more retailers are confirming it. My guess is that Sony doesn't want people to stop buying PS3s for $600 until they officially unveil the price cut.

[b813d8a6e60]Microsoft Extends Manufacturer warranty to 3 years, offers to reimburse those who have paid for repairs[/b813d8a6e60]

Peter Moore sent a letter out today addressing the Ring of Death issues and Microsoft's stance on the matter. This no doubt came from DailyTech's recent report that indicated up to 33% had hardware failing issues. Here is the [url=="http//www.xbox.com/en-US/support/petermooreletter.htm"]full letter[="http//www.xbox.com/en-US/support/petermooreletter.htm"]full letter[/url]
[quote813d8a6e60]To our Xbox Community

You’ve spoken, and we’ve heard you. Good service and a good customer experience are areas of the business that we care deeply about. And frankly, we’ve not been doing a good enough job.

Some of you have expressed frustration with the customer experiences you have had with Xbox 360; frustration with having to return your console for service after receiving the general hardware error message on the console.

The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles have had a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out. But when anyone questions the reliability of our product, or our commitment to our customers, it’s something I take very seriously.

We have been following this issue closely, and with on-going testing have identified several factors that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. To address this issue, and as part of our ongoing work, we have already made certain improvements to the console.

We are also implementing some important policy changes intended to keep you in the game, worry-free.

As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge -- including shipping -- for three years from the console’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience.

If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize. We are taking responsibility and are making these changes to ensure that every Xbox 360 owner continues to have a great experience.

This will take a few days to roll out globally, and I appreciate your continued patience as we launch this program. I’ve posted an FAQ that should address some additional questions, and we’ll update it over the next few days.

I want to thank you, on behalf of all us at Microsoft, for your loyalty.[/quote813d8a6e60]

Sony recently said the price will go down before x-mas.

microsoft does their "sales figures" by calculating how many they've shipped btw, not how many they have actually sold. sony counts actual sales figures. i don't care how many either sell or say they sell, just thought i'd point it out. i'm not sure how nintendo does it but they're wiping the floor with everyone...

oh and E3 is like, 11th - 13th, so maybe a price drop is coming then. wouldn't surpise me considering the circuit city thing.
i've had mine since last december so it won't directly affect me, but more sales will mean more games.

Buying a 360 from GameStop has its pro's and con's. They ship their 360's in the original boxes (not double packed in a cardboard box) and we toss them around like any other box. The other night the hard drive flew out of the box and a co-worker just tossed it on the belt along with the busted box. On the other hand, you can spend $50 and get a warranty. I highly advise it.

Gamestop and Wal-Mart = worst shipping depts of any company

Updated. Amazon PS3 sales have gone up 2800% @_@

MS says it won't cut the 360 price, although many suspect they will. Personally, I don't think they will. The 360s primary SKU - the Premium - is still $100 cheaper then the PS3. Plus, Halo 3 will sell a lot of systems regardless of the consoles price, so they should try to get as much profit as they can from it(now that they are finally making profit from console sales). They need it, MS' video game division is some $6 bil in debt right now.

Other random notes -
-How quickly MS forgets they dropped the price of the original XBox 6 months in lol
-80GB PS3 Bundle is stupid as hell. Motorstorm is a good game, but it isn't a system seller and its old and +20GB is no bargain. For the extra $100 you could probably buy a 200GB HDD. Also, since its not releasing until, August, Sony should have packaged it with Lair for an early release. That way, you get people holding out for Lair to get it(with the added incentive of an early release), and also, I believe Lair would be a more accessible game. Plus, it should only be rated T, so you wouldn't have an issue selling it to minors.

Apparently the 80 GB PS3 will lack the PS2 Emotion Engine. (Source, PS3Scene)

... and a source from Xbox-Scene suggests that Microsoft will in fact announce a price cut tommorow with the following pricing plan

[quoteab56ccb823]The $299 Core pack will drop to $249; the $399 Premium pack will drop to $349; and the recently released $479 Elite model (120 GB model with HDMI) will drop to $399.[/quoteab56ccb823]

Excel

09-07-2007 14:37:02

Ya, like I said, the 80GB will rely on software emulation instead of hardware emulation. Sony's been planning on making that switch for a while in the US and Japan, even in the 60 GB version. No biggy in Europe though, because they've had software emulation from launch.

People make a big deal out of it, but the PS3's software emulation isn't bad, it plays 94% of all PSX/2 games(unlike the 360, which only plays about 250-300 of the original XBox titles).

h3x

09-07-2007 14:43:29

I wasn't making a deal of it, just found it interesting that they are starting to scrap components out of their hardware where as the Xbox is planning on implement 65nm to the CPU/GPU (Codename Falcon) as opposed to the 90nm process they have in current Xbox360 models.

As for Xbox legacy support... I have yet to find a game I can't play on my Xbox360 and like the PS3, there are updates to Backward compatibility that add new games to the list.

[baee430c66e]Metal Gear Solid 4... Yet another PS3 exclusive lost to the Xbox 360?[/baee430c66e]

[quoteaee430c66e]Senior Konami executive Kazumi Kitaue has questioned whether the recent PS3 price cut will have the desired impact on sales. He went on to hint that Metal Gear Solid 4, long expected to be a PS3 exclusive and potential system seller, may also end up on the Xbox 360.

"Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps," Kitaue said.

While there will be no MGS4 this year, lets not forget that GTA used to be PS exclusive and eventually was ported over to the Xbox after being on the PlayStation 2 console for a while.

From what Mr. Kitaue said about MGS4, it sounds like they are going to wait and see if the PS3 price cut makes any significant difference in terms of sales, which they have already said is doubtful

[quote19b4f33cd0]"I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100," commented Kitaue to Reuters. "I don't expect a substantial impact ... With $500, you can buy a personal computer."[/quote19b4f33cd0]

... and if not then they will start looking at dropping its exclusivity with the PS3. So its still quite possible to see MGS4 on the 360. It just depends on how the winds will blow this holiday season.

Don't expect any mention of it at E3 this year (especially at a pre-E3 meeting), as they (Konami) are probably keeping things 'hush-hush' and observing sales reports of the Xbox 360 against the PS3 from now throughout the upcoming holiday season.

didn't this news just come out during the early hours of today? aren't we basing this all on one quote from one person? (who shouldn't even be talking about the PS3 in America) it isn't confirmed, and I'm really hoping it's not true.

dmorris68

13-07-2007 07:10:30

Well, technically you could still consider it a price cut by way of free upgrades. ;)

You're getting 20GB more HDD plus a $60 game, for the same price as the old 60GB. Plus PS2 software emulation that will probably wind up working better and supporting more old titles than the 60GB version's hardware emulator that can't easily be tweaked by updates.

I don't see it as a necessarily disastrous move for Sony, although it does have a disingenuous ring to it.

moviemadnessman

13-07-2007 08:47:50

Maybe I will actually start thinking about shelling out the money for a PS3 now, seeing as the 80Gb is coming around, and it is a better value (as dmorris stated).

I also personally don't see this as a bad move on Sony's part, because they are still selling the 60Gb version, but now they have this 'better' one. Didn't Microsoft see a sales increase when the Elite was offered, even though they had dropped prices on the other two versions? Time will tell. Plus, even if the idea bombs for Sony, they still make so many other things that they can fall back onto.

Just my two cents.

The emotion engine chip is the same chip the PS2 uses, so it can play 100% of the PS1/PS2 games. The switch to soft emulation means only 88% of the PS1/PS2 games can be played(as has been confirmed in the Euro models). If you read the full interview, Reeves says the 80GB HDD is just to make up for the 12% loss in backwards compatibility.

My problem is - what if you don't want Motorstorm? Then you're paying $100 for 20 more GB which is a complete rip off. The PS3's HDD can be easily upgraded by using a 2.5" laptop HD - you could get a 120GB+++ HDD for about $100. Why not give us an option for a cheaper version? Or at least an option for what game we want, don't stick us with just one game.

I guess I just see it as a bad move - if your sales jump 2800% because you dropped the price, shouldn't you keep at that price?

Anyways, SCEA president Kaz Hirai has confirmed this news.

There is no mention of multiple discs nor a single source backing up the statement. It just says that there was a rumor flying around at E3 that Rockstar was having problems putting the game on the disc. My guess is a group of fanboys sparked a rumor and it spread like wildfire at the convention.

Until a high-ranking employee of Rockstar (or even a programmer of the game for that matter) makes a comment about a possible multi-disc release or any concern on whether the game will fit on a DVD-9 without removing components from the game, I'm calling bullshit to the validity of the rumor (especially considering that all previews of the new game we have seen so far is coming from the Xbox 360 console).

I did say it was a rumor. Not saying that journalists can't be fanboys, but I'm not sure that journalists would start rumors like that. If E3 was open to the public as it has been in past years, there would be more reason to doubt it.

More specific details have been revealed on the exact dismal situation which Microsoft has reported for the year ended June 30th. Losses for the Entertainment division increased by 47 percent due largely to a $1.06 billion charge as a result of the extension of the Xbox 360 warranty. Further to this MS shipped just 700k consoles during the quarter compared to 1.8 million for the same period last year.

When we started designing PGR4 our primary goals were to create a great and unique experience over and above PGR3, to push the hardware as far as we could, and obviously to ensure that we give great value for money. DVD size is absolutely not a factor that we consider when designing our games... and PGR4 is no exception. DVD9 gives us more than we need to create a fabulous experience for you guys.

[quote17afcc6334]This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young... fearing, hating, and destroying Black people.[/quote17afcc6334]

Resident Evil is a zombie shooter and has always been since the first game in '96 (it has never been a game meant to dehumanize a particular group of individuals).

Also, the game is not marketed to children (the game has an M-rating, which means they can't obtain the game without an ID or a parent's approval, and the game is set in Africa (Last I checked, the entire region of Africa is predominately black... it wouldn't make much sense if the zombies were any other race).

This is just another example of an oversensitive minority group.

Fr1zzank

02-08-2007 08:13:32

Nobody cared when the white protagonist in RE4 went about killing a bunch of (seemingly) Spanish people. You put the hero in a place which is mostly racially homogeneous, and of course he/she is bound to kill a lot of one race. However, when I watched the trailer, BEFORE I read about the controversy, I couldn't help but feel it was going to receive some negative feedback. I felt dirty just watching it.

As for the DVD-9 thing, I had just read that the PGR team wasn't going to be able to show different times of day in the game because they couldn't fit it on the disc. They've apparently solved that by using different lighting methods, I guess.

yep.
but i don't understand why you'd need all different textures for nighttime. unless most of your lighting system is fake.
i was just reading something about the lighting in Killzone 2 and how every single bit of light is actually created by a light source. it said most games on the other hand use an ambient light that lights up everything, and then they add lights here and there to add mood. i knew that's how it was in most games, but i think using textures to convey light sources is kinda lazy.

"You won't see different times of day per city because this involves recreating all the textures again (one for day and one for night). Whilst this wasn't a problem for our dev team, it was a problem fitting all this data onto a single DVD."

"Having the game spread across two discs isn't an option for a number of reasons. Sorting out gameplay both in single and multiplayer where you always have to swap discs around would be difficult, and detrimental to the flow of the game. Also, having two discs puts the price of manufacturing up, and that's one we'd have to discuss with the publisher."[/quote9aa8b1459c]

Also, there's rumours of Rockstar going exclusive to Sony platforms. Digg it[=http//digg.com/playstation_3/Rockstar_goes_Sony_Exclusive_GTA_IV_sequels_all_on_PS3]Digg it.

So, what does everybody think? A $50 price drop for the Premium Xbox 360 bundle, a $30 drop for the Elite, and a $20 cut for the Core. Is that really anything to get excited over? Why the biggest drop off the Premium? Why not the Elite? I suppose they just released it, so why drop it so quickly? I'm not wowed by it all, but it may help sales, just not sales in Japan )

As for the Rli deal, I doubt it'll actually come to be. However, if it does, it'll be a huge boon to Sony. Everyone hated on Sony for losing the exclusivity of their titles, well, with a bigger name like Rli vowing they got Sony's back, it would have to help sway some other third-party producers to hop on the Sony train. But, again, I don't expect to find it to be true.

But, it will still fail horribly to Rock Band, in my opinion. Rock Band has MTV's backing, as well as the Harmonix team who were responsible for the first two Guitar Heroes. Guitar Hero is being produced/developed (whichever) by Neversoft, of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater fame. From skateboarding to guitar wailing? Also, Rock Band will allow users to download entire albums, versus Guitar Hero only allowing for individual songs, or song packs (as far as I know).

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Guitar Hero, and would get the third one in a heartbeat, if I had the money. In a perfect world, I'd have both Guitar Hero III, and Rock Band. Since it's not a perfect world, I'll probably get Rock Band, with the drum peripheral.

[quote8168f2db3e]God of War creator confirms three PS3 exclusives
by GamePro Staff | 08/08/2007 | 114019 AM PST

David Jaffe confirmed in an interview with GamePro that Eat Sleep Play's three upcoming games would in fact be original PS3 exclusives.

Jaffe clarified statements that in addition to the Twisted Metal Head-On port for PS2, his new independent studio of 20 employees will concurrently be working on the first of three original games exclusively for PlayStation 3.

"I can't disclose themes," Jaffe said, "but the new game is medium to hardcore in terms of game play and will focus heavily on multiplayer."

"I am more excited about this game than anything I have ever worked on. I cannot wait to unveil it," Jaffed added from Eat Sleep Play headquarters in Salt Lake City.

The three new games will either be on Blu-ray disc or as downloadable titles depending on how Sony decides to distribute the games. The first unnamed title is expected sometime in 2008.

Eat Sleep Play was founded in July by David Jaffe and Scott Campbell both formerly of Sony Studios. Combined, they are responsible for such titles as God of War and Twisted Metal.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's full exclusive interview. [/quote8168f2db3e]

[quote9bc2305b9b]Sony Claims PS3 Failure Rate of Less Than 1 Percent
PS3 failure rates are "around 0.02 percent" according to a Sony executive.
GamePro Staff
Thursday, August 16, 2007 100 PM PDT

PS3 failure rates are "around .02 percent" according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe founder, Chris Deering while speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival on Tuesday.

If accurate, that puts PS3 failure rates well below the industry average of three to five percent.

By comparison, some reports pin Xbox 360 failure rates as high as one third of all consoles in existence. As a result, Microsoft extended the Xbox 360 warranty from one to three years in July citing "an unacceptable number of repairs" without disclosing specific failure rates.

Nintendo has yet to reveal any failure rates for the Wii. [/quote9bc2305b9b]

Final Fantasy VII remake confirmed?[=http//playstation3ws.blogspot.com/2007/08/final-fantasy-7-coming-to-ps3-near-you.html]Final Fantasy VII remake confirmed?

Okay, now I know this is one shady source, but still. I'm sure it must get all the FF fans a-twitter with excitement. But again, I'll believe it when I see it. Or when Squenix confirm it.

If Xbox 360 users haven't noticed already Fox has joined the list of studios that are now selling content on Xbox Live Marketplace (First releases Family Guy Season 1,2)

[quotef2f684509b]Microsoft has signed up Fox as the newest partner for its Xbox Live Video Marketplace, and the two are launching with "Family Guy," a show aimed squarely at the service's young male gamer demo.

Video Marketplace, which allows Xbox 360 owners to download movies and TV shows via the vidgame console's Internet connection, already has films from Warner Bros., Paramount, Lionsgate and New Line and TV shows from CBS, NBC Universal and MTV Networks. Some content is available in high-def, making it the only Internet videostore offering HD downloads.

Deal likely marks the first step in a broader relationship between Fox and Microsoft to distribute TV shows and films.[/quotef2f684509b]

[b7b706b8932]Microsoft debuts Extenders for Windows Media Center, adds DivX and XviD Support[/b7b706b8932]

[quote7b706b8932]Today Microsoft is announcing a reinvigorated Media Center Extender effort called... wait for it... Extenders for Windows Media Center. Ok, the name totally sucks, but the important part is Microsoft upgraded its wayward Extender system with a new version that takes full advantage of Vista (including live HDTV streaming), supports 802.11n, and adds something that really blew our mind codecs we actually care about, namely XviD and DivX. Niveus, Linksys, and D-Link will all be launching new devices based on this software platform, so watch out for those -- as well as DVD players, TVs, and all manner of other home theater devices Microsoft is apparently trying to get this new system built right into. Unfortunately this new Extender rev isn't being announced for the Xbox 360 (yet), so we'll all have to wait a while longer before playing XviD and DivX movies on that thing -- without transcoding, anyway.[/quote7b706b8932]

[quoteeddfb2b2d7]TGS 2007 Rumble Confirmed
Sony's controllers will shake again.
by Anoop Gantayat

September 19, 2007 - Big shocker at today's Electronic Arts pre Tokyo Game Show press event. While playing a demo of Burnout Paradise, we felt something that we never thought we'd feel from a PS3 controller -- shake!

That's right, Burnout Paradise is the first rumble-equipped PS3 game we've ever played. Which made us think at the time, if the game is making the controller shake, the controller must be a new version of the Sixaxis!

In fact, the controller we were using to play the demo looked exactly like a standard Sixaxis, except that it had a sticker on the bottom that said "RUMBLE." It also felt notably heavier than the standard Sixaxis.

We presume this is a prototype of the PlayStation 3's new rumble controller, whatever it's going to be called.

The rumble itself felt around the level of PlayStation 2 rumble. We're not sure just yet if Sony is using any of that next generation technology Immersion has been talking about for the past few months.

A formal announcement is expected tomorrow at Kaz Hirai's keynote address.

As for the rest of the EA event, as well as details from today's Sony and Konami events, check back at IGNPS3 through the night.[/quoteeddfb2b2d7]

[quoteeddfb2b2d7]Next-generation Vibration Technology

You’ve been enjoying rumble all these years, why do you need next-generation vibration? Because when you experience new TouchSense® technology, you’ll feel the even more exciting and subtle tactile effects that can add to the fun of playing the game. Next-generation vibration can be used to match the realism expected of next-generation high-definition graphics and high-fidelity sound.

More Fun

For example, in a next-gen off-road racing game, you would not only be able to see every detail of the terrain — gravel, rocks, sand, mud — you would also be able to feel how the vehicle’s response to these features transfers to the steering wheel — an experience more like driving in the real world. You might feel both the sharp pop of shifting gears, and at the same time, the force of acceleration or deceleration. If you were also firing a machine gun, you might feel both the vehicle movement and the weapon’s repeating action. Or you might experience the vehicle movement and feel that you are being fired upon (taking damage).

Read what those who have experienced Immersion's next-gen technology are saying

Immersion Unveils Next-Gen Rumble Technology, Gamepro.com, June 16, 2006
by Sid Shuman
“I personally experienced Immersion's new rumbling technology yesterday, and I have to say that it's a major, major step in the right direction. Not only are the rumbles stronger, they feel more detailed and crisp. A nearby explosion sends powerful shockwaves rippling through your hands; wielding a lightsaber produces a pleasant "humming" sensation; and machinegun fire feels downright violent. It's ten times better than the rumbling on the PS2 or Xbox 360.”

Immersion’s Magic Touch, Game Daily, June 19, 2006
by Chris Boffo
"But this single, next-generation motor is not only capable of spinning in multiple directions, it can stop on a dime and is generally much stronger than its predecessors. The result is a richer, more intense experience that will further immerse us in these upcoming games…. The difference between this technology and previous controllers is akin to making the jump from the original Resident Evil on PSOne to Resident Evil 4. It's just in stark contrast to what I've been used to.”

Rumble Into The Next-Generation, The Game Feed, July 27, 2006
by Hang Lauv
“You’re probably asking yourself, “How can rumble be any better?” Fortunately for us, Immersion has shown us how. They have convinced us next-generation rumble is real and ready today.. . . The realism and impressiveness created by Immersion’s new TouchSense technology is unlike anything you’ll ever feel. In fact, you have probably never even imagined how precise and advanced rumble can be.”

Does Rumble Matter?, Next Generation, August 23, 2006
by Kris Graft
“In short, yes, this is a definite improvement over today’s available rumble, and the consumer would be best served if TouchSense became a standard feature.”

Total Immersion — Will Sony ever be ready to rumble? (URL not available.) Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, September 2006
by Giancarlo Varanini
"With the next-gen consoles, Immersion has essentially completed new technology that offers greater versatility. In fact, there’s such a broad range of effects available that if gamers had the opportunity to feel what it would be like to have them in a next-gen game, there would be even greater demand for them to be included."

More Variety
Using three operating modes, the new technology can provide a greater range of effects. Three examples (1) The stuttering jolts of firing an assault rifle, then the deadening click sensation produced from an empty chamber. (2) The initial accelerating surge of a light saber powering up, and when you swing, the pulse of the energy sweep. When you change direction, the smooth recoil and slight change in force that tells you you’re wielding a mighty weapon. (3) The springy sensation of hitting a tennis ball or the fast, crisp, connective feel of catching a long pass.

Greater Realism

Besides more variety, effects can be stronger, shorter in duration, crisper, more closely spaced, and more in sync with onscreen events. That means the feel of the game can be more realistic. The staccato of machine gun fire can more closely mimic a real weapon's action, and the feel can be better synchronized to the fire blasts you see on the screen.

New TouchSense technology will also support more varied in-game warnings like taking damage, entering a dangerous area, low ammo, or target warnings (like friendly target or missile lock). All these warnings could be made very distinguishable.

Motion Control and Tilt Sensing

Next-gen vibration can work alongside motion-control and tilt-sensing features. Because the speed at which a user can move or tilt the controller is much slower than the frequencies generated by vibration feedback, it's possible to differentiate these signals using filtering and other techniques.

Wireless and Easy on Power

The new technology can be used in wireless controllers, and power consumption will not be greater than existing dual-motor systems. In fact, in many cases, power consumption will be less.

Dual-motor Game Compatible

The games you have now, which were designed for present-day dual-motor systems will feel very similar when played on a system with next-generation vibration. An Immersion emulator in the console or peripheral will handle this translation without you having to do anything.

Find out more about the advantages of next-generation vibration, Immersion’s developer tools that ease and speed vibration programming, and how the technology works.[/quoteeddfb2b2d7]

i don't care about rumble a lot, i haven't missed it really, but it's just that the motion control is so lame and useless. i'll take rumble over it any day.
