This is the best price I've seen on a gig of ram that I'd trust putting in my mini and is what I plan to grab once I sell my iMac off.

http//www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-141-198&depa=1

Aside from the positive reviews coming from Mac mini owners, I've had excellent experience with the company for cheaper SD cards. I've got a 512 and 256 card in my Zodiac and Digicam from them, both flawless. Just thought this might interest someone looking for a lot of ram on the cheap.

Kingston memory run well on Apple's?

Works great. Kingston for a long time was a mac-centric mac RAM vendor. I've used them for years and never had a problem.

For the most part as long as you're not getting really generic (other kind of cheap!) memory it should work fine.

my 512 Kingston stick works great in my macmini.

how about the airport/bluetooth upgrade kit? anyone know where i can score one of those?

adenosine

Wish I woulda known about this before I ordered my KVM and keyboard from them. Guess I really don't have the money for it right now anyway.

alexvega

09-03-2005 10:48:19

also does the minimac really need a gig? Will it run better w/ 512?

adenosine

09-03-2005 10:53:17

Most things I read online say that you really need 512 for it to run Mac OS X effectively. But if you only have 1 slot, buying 512 and then later realizing you want 1 gig means you tossing away a perfectly good 512 stick. If it had two slots, then I could see getting 512 and if it wasn't enough, getting another 512 stick.

So, in summary, I think a gig is the best option just because there is only one slot and you don't want to have to toss a stick of ram down the road.

NeoWolf

256 will be fine for most basic things. The more you wanna do the more you'll need. I run WoW so I'll wanna up the RAM asap...

adenosine

09-03-2005 11:22:18

'Most basic things'? You've seen my taskbar I posted in the Mac vs Windows thread. I need that gig.

NeoWolf

09-03-2005 11:39:43

... Yes you do. x I'm currently running 768MB on this iMac. It's perfect but the odd combo's not an option on the mini.

alexvega

09-03-2005 13:21:40

ok i'll get the gig... any word on the airport/bluetooth upgrade?

DIGITALgimpus

I'm often compiling software.

So a Gig is pretty much the min these days. 4+ would be nice.

I'm just going to get my Bluetooth/Airport Mac Mini back at the Apple store. Which reminds me, I better call to see if they have any in stock.

If they do please let me know. I've been waiting to hear when they do.

Screw that. Tear the damn thing open and wait for the kits to come out!

I'm an instant gratification sort of person. All this waiting makes me want to play Hungry Hungry Hippos.

PodTopia

LOL Adenosine. I may not be able to wait either. I've got to call my local store to make sure they have them in stock.

VERIFIED with the Apple Store that they will have Bluetooth/Wireless kits in by the 25th and would be more than happy to install them for me. They also said that I could bring in my Mini and exchange it for the other one (w/ bluetooth/wireless preinstalled). YAY!

Mini's will probably ship with 512 by summer. Until then, it really needs to have an upgrade. My 256 is a little sluggish. OS X can run much better than this.
If you can afford it, max it out with a gig. You'll be happier in the long run.

sorry to bring this thread back from the dead...

but i've been searching all over for the best solution for mac mini memory upgrades and i've heard horror stories of kingston memory causing kernel panics in the mac mini.

but have we decided that kingston is the way to go?

chillywilly

19-04-2005 10:12:04

I think Kingston is being shyed away from...

Crucial is the best choice. It's $148 for a 1gb.

The specs for the RAM are

DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 128Meg x 64

Look for specs and you'll be good to go.

whenrabbisattack

i just found this site

http//www.memorysolutions.com/macminimemory.html

i've seen this site being advertised on mac sites before... i think i'm going to purchase from here.

chillywilly

19-04-2005 11:17:59

That should work. The PC3200 will just drop down to PC2700 mode.

And $119 is not a bad price.

I need to get one of those here, plus a keyboard. Thinking of just using my USB mouse from my PC and getting another one to replace it.

I plan on also getting Virtual PC 7 and using my other copy of Win XP.

This will be a nice system to use and one that I'll be able to keep others away from, too.... don't need soda spilled around this system.

whenrabbisattack

19-04-2005 12:02:49

the next version of virtual PC is supposed to implement hardware accelerated graphics... couple that with the 64 bit tiger on a G5 and that is one fast windows on your mac )

...except the mac mini has a G4, not a G5... (which is why i'm buying that iMac)

chillywilly

19-04-2005 13:02:02

Yeah, once I outgrow the mini, a G5 is next on my list.

I've used the Virtual PC before (under OS 9) and it's not bad, but the PC is a lot faster.

This new version should really do well.... even on the G4.

I am so ready to leave the PC world behind, at least at home. For work, I encourage PC use... it's job security. lol

Just finished a successful installation of that RAM in my Mini. Now to sell the 512MB stick. It's great!

Last thanksgiving I bought a 512 stick at Compusa and wanted to know if it would work well in the Mini. Here are the specs

Manufacturer Centon
512MB PC2700 184pin DDR DIMM Memory Module

Thanks in advance!

mapStuart

25-04-2005 09:12:40

That 512MB DIMM should work fine, although as many have pointed out - you're better off trying to get a gig - you'll see much better performance. But for the time being, the 512MB should help things along.

Do you think it is best to install the new RAM before you boot up a new mimi for the 1st time or does it even matter? I was thinking that I may want to boot it up as is to make sure it works and then swap out the out one for the 1GB.

stavros

25-04-2005 09:17:34

Absolutely, I have that 512 in my PC (totalling 1g) and won't be using it as much, so may as well upgrade until I go balls out.

Seems like a good price from NewEgg and 1. I dont know if this will work for the mini and 2. I have never heard of Rosewill.

Anyone have any opinions or experiances?

Booting up with the included RAM is probably a wise idea. There's no harm in having the lifirst bootli done with less RAM. Its a dynamic thing that doesn't impact any settings.

Checking to make sure your original works with no problems is a sound way to go.

The specifications look compatible with the Mac Mini. Rosewill is supposedly a decent manufacturer - not top class but haven't really read any bad things about them. These 1GB sticks seem to be available in the $85-$90 shipped price range pretty frequently. Here's a discussion from this past weekend ($86 shipped from ChiefValue) where folks discuss its mac-compatibility

Just got this stick from newegg today, but my Mac is a day behind it appears. The Rosewill stick has PQI chips on it and a lot of people have had good luck with those sticks in thier Macs, so I'm thinking this should be fine. As soon as I get this in the Mac I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well, after the interesting experience of cracking the mini open, I installed the 1GB Rosewill stick. I'm currently typing from the mini right now after an afternoon of opening and playing anything and everything I could think of. The RAM seems to work great. It makes a HUGE difference. It was so frickin' slow with 256MB. OSX really seems to make efficient use of the RAM too. Anyway I'd recommend this RAM to anyone that wants a cheap way to upgrade their mini. (well cheap for a gig of ram D )
