I was an 8/4 IP3 who recieved their ipod today. I opened that ecost box, and boy, did I want to dig all the way into the Apple box, but I waited. I drove to my local BestBuy and exchanged my free 20gig for a 40gig. I told them I recieved it as a gift, but did not specify where it was purchased.

Since it was still wrapped, the sales clerk had no problem exchanging it for me. And now my 40gig is synching and I am happy.

Just wanted to post this to let everyone know it can be done.

Hello I was one of the 8/4s who shipped back around 8/19

I decided that I really didn't care about warrenties and that I would be upgrading the iPod every generation anyways, so the Apple Store was the perfect place to go to attempt to trade in the 20GB iPod i recieved from eCost/Gratis.

Anyways I went to the apple store at a local mall of mine that weekend and explained to the clerk that I had recieved this as a gift from a family member out of state as a back to school gift, but I really wanted a 40GB instead, the clerk told me that it was fine as long as the computer verified that it was not reported stolen, and not registered to anybody. Obviously it worked and recieved $299 store credit, and paied $70 for the 40GB iPod via educational discount ($5.78 tax)

I Could never fill up 40 gigs worth of music... I think I could barely fill up an ipod Mini

Inferno69

I do.

i have 1.37 gigs right now

Nabs

13-09-2004 17:25:03

I wish I got the 40, my 20 is filling up rather quickly.

As of today I am using 8.96gb of my IPOD. Took no time. I would probably poke my eyes out if I had a mini.

DisastirousMurmur

13-09-2004 17:34:41

yea 20 GB is just perfect, i got 9 GBs of music right now, and only listen to like 7 GB of it, and not much good music is coming out right now, so its gonna take some time for me to fill up the 20GB i ordered.

Inferno69

13-09-2004 17:56:16

im ordering at 20gb and sellin it to buy a mini. I dont have close to 20Gb of music, nto even close to 4.

Nabs

13-09-2004 17:59:44

dude, dont get the mini.

DisastirousMurmur

13-09-2004 18:01:09

i'd get teh mini if it had like 10 GB of harddrive, but 4 GB isnt enough, and the mini does look kinda cool

Inferno69

13-09-2004 18:04:10

The mini pwnes all. I dont have even 4GB of music so i dont need a 20GB and the mini is nicer.

BlueTypewriter

13-09-2004 19:44:07

I have just shy of 40gigs of music here, plus I have an audible subscribtion, so I have 1-2 gigs of NPR programs and digital books.

So need the 40gig, plus the dock is nice to have.

After I bought the 40gig, I bought an iskin evo2 and an itrip from www.theistore.com.

All told I spent $180 for a 40gig ipod, an itrip, and a nice case. A great deal, if you ask me.

Inferno69

13-09-2004 19:47:59

do the skins stick out, like are they rubber? or are they like stickers?

DisastirousMurmur

13-09-2004 19:49:14

whats the dock for and whats it do? and y would u subscribe to download music? just use IRC and if u dont know how to use that get kazaa lite K++

Inferno69

13-09-2004 19:50:41

its the same as the usb cable just, a dock.

DisastirousMurmur

13-09-2004 19:54:10

o, so u pay like 40$ more just to look at your ipods screen while uploading songs into it?

Inferno69

13-09-2004 19:55:34

nope, u can look at your ipods screen while its connected to the cable too. LOL its just a waste of money.

BlueTypewriter

13-09-2004 20:01:10

The dock is nice so the ipod doesnt get scratched while charging. Plus it has a line out, so I can leave it next to my livingroom stereo and play songs through that.

As for using IRC/K++ for songs, not for my songs. My music is slightly obscure, so I rarely find what I'm looking for using these tools. I use Soulseek and Usenet to get all the music I need. Plus my 200 cds I ripped.

Off topic, how the hell do you people do close to 100 posts in day? Don't you have school or work? Seems like there are better things to do with your time, but thats just me.

The skins are silicone and add a layer of protection against scratches and small drops. If you have ever seen an ipod that is scratched to hell, you'll understand. Plus I fly 3-4 times a week for my job, so it makes it easy to just drop it in my daybag and be done it with. Lets me be more careless with my ipod.

Audible is for audiobooks. Its a bookclub online, plus I can get the New York Times and anything off National Public Radio from them. At $15/month, its well worth it to me.

It's all about quantity, not quality, when it comes to MP3s...I have about 26GB which isn't even close to Zatch, but yeah.

Didn't even think about the Educational discount. Now i kinda hope I get the Apple iPod so I can get the discount at the Apple store... (

BlueTypewriter

13-09-2004 22:46:48

Looks like I only have half that....Itunes had double entries for each of my songs. I thought that was a little high...

shifuimam

13-09-2004 22:51:00

Yeah...I have all my CDs ripped plus scads more of music...what's interesting is that these days I only really listen to the ripped albums as opposed to all my download music. I have like every song ever performed by Tupac and I hate rap. Like I said...I just like watching the numbers get bigger. D

Admin

13-09-2004 23:03:15

For me the music is about quality, NOT quantity. I have ~17.5gb of lossless audio on my 20gb ipod as we speak. Total songs? About 550.

shifuimam

13-09-2004 23:05:31

Yeah quality as in audio quality matters to me when I rip my CDs or I'm looking for music I REALLY want - 256kbps MP3s seem to work well for me. But as far as "is this band really worth my listening time" goes...I have so much random shit in my MP3 directory. only like 40% of it is actually worth listening to more than once. I just never got around to cleaning up the directory, so it keeps getting bigger.

sambeckett

13-09-2004 23:07:19

i have 200gigs of music, so i dont care about a 40 gig ipod. i would have to pick and choose still.. i opted for the smaller unit. plus a cradel is pointless if you ask me.. so i spent 85$ for a cool glowing case and the iradio crapper for my car,,,,

shifuimam

13-09-2004 23:09:15

I was going to get the iTrip thing except that I live in a big city, and there aren't really enough free FM frequencies for it to work well. Guess I'm stuck burning CDs for awhile longer... P

What the crap would you do with 200gb music? I mean...there's only so much out there that's worth the space, unless you REALLY like techno and happy hardcore and have every mix of every song ever produced on the planet.

Admin

13-09-2004 23:13:23

If you can't do the iTrip, try what I did

You know, the scary thing is, I thought about doing the EXACT same thing, except that I'm pretty sure my in-dash CD doesn't have an aux input. It's a low-end Pioneer I bought on clearance, and I think all it has is RCA outputs for an external amp. ( At least I have 200 CDRs I got for free. I think. I don't even know if I ever got the rebate checks for those...

Is Soulseek better than Limewire? I personally use torrents because I download in albums, not song by song, but I just recently tried LimeWire and it's pretty damn good, downloads are fast and it works for Linux.

M3wThr33

14-09-2004 00:45:04

I have 17.6GB. About 80% is ripped myself.
I already have it planned out how I'm going to upgrade my 20GB to a 40GB. (Don't forget the 40GB includes the dock!)

As for SoulSeek, it's a fairly exclusive community that cares about music. They HATE getting attention and new people on the server. Tread carefully.

shifuimam

14-09-2004 06:21:24

Is SoulSeek another P2P or something different?

PallarAndersVisa

14-09-2004 07:31:28

yeah its another p2p. i love it. Its really nice for less known music, plus tons of my online metal forum friends have it.

I like ripping my mp3s at 256kbps. 192 is good enough for me, but I like to push it at 256.

my new car cd player came in today. I had a really nice sony that i bought not too long ago, but I never thought twice about AUX inputs, so I just went ahead and spent 200 bucks on a new one with auxilary ins, and sold my other one to a friend for 100.

20-09-2004 17:50:50

I sure wish I had waited (and had an extra $100). I suppose I could still exchange it with a bunch of bitching, but still need that $100. 872MB free (

I went to CompUSA and got $320.99 in store credit for the hPod - they gave me credit for the tax, too. Bought a 40GB Apple iPod. It's gorgeous!!!! Just opened the box. ) It was no problem.

The 40GB including the dock was the kicker for me...I want to play this through my stereo system.

Oh but they were clueless about the educator's discount. Oh well.

Anyone know of any other stores that have both the 20gb HP and either the 40 gb APPLE or HP? Also, what should I say when I go to exchange it? I might actually have my mom do it (more convincing)....

So far I am planning at trying at Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUsa and maybe Frys...Where else?

mofostudio

21-09-2004 22:19:28

I got my Hpod today and took it to CompUSA to switch for the 40GB. Be sure you don't open the shrink wrap and tell them it was a gift. They did it, no questions asked. I tried best buy before i went to compusa but they wouldn't do it without a reciept... so I said "they bought it for me online"... still nothing. This was my 1st positive experience with CompUSA...

I went to CompUSA in Roseville, MN. All they had in 40GB was HP, but I wasn't too concerned with strictly getting apple... COme to think of it, they did have a 40GB apple, but it was a 3G. So I said "Buh-Bye" to that.
