Do I need to make separate playlists for each artist and genre, or is this something the iPod will automatically pick up on and do on its own?

you will need to add/edit tags for ithe songs.

Yeah, the tags are all setup already. I've had lots of time to get ready for my iPod )

iTunes has a feature called "Smart Playlist." You can set parameters in there for certain artists; certain genres; etc. It will automatically update as your library updates.
