Techdude,
I sure hope so.

Hey, if anyone knows about networking a DSL connection on Macs, please PM me. I'm trying to figure out if I can do something so both my computers have Internet using Airport on one computer, and a wired connection on the mini.

techdude05

21-02-2005 14:43:29

how?

i thought the airport only turned an wired connection from the modem to wireless. does it have an ethernet port?

i was gonna get an airport so that i can hookup my ibook, PC, and mac mini, but i didnt want to pay $ for the WiFi card on my PC and the airport card on my mac mini.

probably not. Had a friend BUY an mac mini direct from apple and they said they'd be shipping it March 9th at the earliest.

Tech,
I'm clueless about the wireless stuff. What I want to do is split the outcoming ethernet cable from the DSL modem – one direct to the Macmini since our free ones don't have Airport. The other to the Airport Extreme so I can use my existing iMac anywhere in the house. Anybody know if this would work someway... I'm just lost with this kind of stuff... never had to learn it.

i dont think u can split an ethernet cable like a telephone splitter....you need a switch i believe.

i did this very thing. what you need to do is this.
if you don't have a wireless router you will need to get one to "split" the ethernet connection. you can get any cheap one or if you want to stay apple get their airport basestation. it will cost you a lot more though.

you plug one ethernet cable into your dsl modem plug the other end into the wireless router. now you can run ethernet cables from the routers remaining ports to the ethernet ports on your wired computers.

or for any of your computers that have wireless cards or airport extreme installed you can connect wirelessly with the router. if you buy the apple airport basestation the setup is extremely simple and you plug a printer into it and share it with all your computers.

hope this helps.

So if I get a wireless router from another manufacturer, it's compatible with the Airport card in the Mac? Does any wireless router work? The Airport Base is like $200, which is rather high considering I see ones in the newspaper for like $50, but I don't know if these are compatible or not... damn this is confusing.... these new technologies taking me by surprise!

NeoWolf

Airport is just a fancy name for 802.11G, the same wireless that's in just about everything else now. They are most certainly compatible.

any wireless router should work with an Airport card. i used to have a Linksys router and it was compatible.

the Airport Extreme Basestation has only one LAN port. Its more money compared to other routers because its fancy looking, well designed, and has a built in modem. So if you are still on dialup you can share your internet with the rest of the household.

i have the Airport Express router now. its $99. but it doesn't have a LAN port so if you need to split your ethernet connection forget about it. this is strictly for computers with wireless cards. but its nice because you can stream iTunes to your stereo by plugging it into Airport Express.

Remember to only use WiFi Certified equipment.

Otherwise, the actual compatibility is unknown. Lots of problems with equipment that isn't certified. Those that are (most products) it's on the box and clearly displayed (for good reason).

Compliant and Certified are two very different things.

Compliant gear may not work with other gear. There was no independant testing that it met the specs. Certified gear meets the requirements.

A quick googling of "hub vs switch" or something similar should yield your answer. I don't much feel like explaining it (

any 802.11b or 802.11g router will work just fine with your mini. If you want to use the Airport Express (not extreme) and still have a wired lan connection to your computers you can do this even though the Airport Express doesn't have a seperate lan port. All you have to do is buy a cheap ($10 or so) Ethernet switch. Plug your cable modem/DSL into one port, the Airport Express into another port, and your computer into another port. The Airport Express (once you configure it) will automatically route and act as a DHCP server both to your wireless computers and any wired computers plugged into your cheap Ethernet switch (a switch is for all purposes like a hub but send the packets to the exact machine instead of broadcasting it to every machine on the LAN).

good luck

Yup. That's the copy/pasted reply they gave me.

If they are being honest.. or just want me to shut up... I don't know.

But that's what they said. Sounds about right. So I'm pretty confident they will ship at least some this week.

tyketto

27-02-2005 07:08:06

I'd be surprised if all of us who are processing didn't ship. I'm almost at a month processing, and I know a few of you are before me.
But I doubt they had tons of orders within the first few weeks.
