1. buy a new ipod.
2. return broken ipod 1 week later in same box.
3. don't go back to store.

umm im not sure if its the same as gameboy advanced but on gameboy theres this little bar code on the actual gameboy and they chech if they actually sol that gameboy, so if theres no bar code on the ipod then u can do that, thats what ill do if something happens to my ipod... and i gotta do that with my head phones that i broke like a year ago.

Even if you didn't pay for it, it's still covered under the manufacturer's warranty. Make sure to register with the appropriate company (Apple or HP) and be covered. Even if you purchased the iPod outright from PC/MacMall/eCost, you can't return it to them if it's defective. They tell you to contact the manufacturer directly.
If it's DOA, I'm sure Apple or HP will replace it. Even if you didn't buy it, you still have a packing slip showing when it was purchased for you.,..

You can receive warranty service for any iPod that has a valid serial number (all the ones Gratis sends out do).

Yes
Register it with Apple via serial number. You can buy AppleCare for it online if you want to extend warranty but it comes with a year warranty from Apple.

If it's an HP you can register for support on HP's site and upgrade your warranty to another year, accidental damage coverage, etc. I haven't looked into it quite yet as far as prices and options go, but like with AppleCare you have up until the end of the first year after purchase to upgrade your warranty.
