I didn't switch to HP, I simply ordered it to begin with. Will this give me the same result as if I had switched?

yes. but you may not have the option to get an apple if it's available first. check on your order status page and see if it says "20 gig hp ipod (if available)"

It does. I'd rather get the HP for their extended support but I don't really care that much either way. I just want it as soon as possible, haha.
