Holy shit ship it to me. You know how long 18 months is? Over a fuking year. I'd be like 3 inches taller, 30 pounds more, and a whole lot more music to hold in an ipod. Hell, bye that time there will be gen 5.

22-09-2004 19:16:54
yea 18 months is a year and a half..i would plan to use a $300 electronic device for longer than that (

so then you send it back to apple in a year and they replace it free of charge...what's the problem? chances are it'll last longer than 18 months.

Also this note is on the website.
[quote5f60a1b5c6]In response to this experience my brother Van and I made the short film "iPod's Dirty Secret." After we finished production of the film, Apple began offerring a battery replacement program for the ipod for a fee of $99 and an extended warranty for the ipod for $59.[/quote5f60a1b5c6]

$100 just to fix batteries is still a crap load..
and gage, the warranty is limited, its not like u can have it replaced every year for free

Actually... you can replace the battery, there are several guides on the internet, just google for it.
Any device with a rechargable battery eventually needs the battery replaced. They can only recharge so many times. Any player you buy with rechargable batteries will need the battery replaced. That's just the technology. Perhaps fuel cells or some other technology will help us. But until then that's the way it works.
Rather lame reason to hate the iPod. My laptop has the same situation. So does my Sony Clie PDA. My cell phone, etc. etc.
Karma down for posting something so silly as that.

Well i had 2 radioshack NiMh batteries in my sony discman for nearly 3 years. they just kept on recharging and playing and playing and playing and finally died this summer. It was over 3 years, which is awesome for a pair of radio shack AA NiMH.
I think the iPod's battery is better quality than radio shit so i think we will all be fine for a couple years

The iPod battery life has always been an issue, and one I'm sure Apple is working on. Until then, there are options to make the problem easier to deal with. I think many batteries go because people use the things so much. Do you think it doesn't use a lot of juice to keep spinning a hard drive?
But even so, you're going to say the iPod isn't all it's cracked up to be because of that? The thing has just about a perfect interface and dominates the market. People love the damn thing. I don't hear people expressing their admiration for an iRiver or any other imitation wannabe put out there. There's only one iPod, accept no imitations (even if the battery doesn't last as long as you think it should).

You're a moron...battery goes for over 500 charge cycles. That can be more than 5 years if used correctly...apparently, you did NOT use it correctly. That is all...

Apple just recently released a firmware update upgrading the Ipods powere management software.

it dies after 18 months if you charge it every day (it goes through about 500 full charges) and with the new extended battery life of the 4G (12 hours) you'd better not be using it that much. I charge mine probably twice a week, so it will last forever ;) I have a 3G though, the 4G will last even longer.

Yeah, that's a known problem...and is exactly what's preventing me from purchasing one at retail price. If I paid $300 for a product, I would be PISSED if it died after 1.5 years, and I had to pay EXTRA money to get it fixed?
But hell...I'm not gonna let that worry me when I receive this item for free. My only concern is how I'm gonna get it to play in my car for those long road trips! 8)

hell, the battery in my dad's laptop lasted a good 2-3 years before it completely poopped out. Now it cant hold a charge for more than 10-15 minutes

Besides, i'll use it in my car hooked to the cigarette lighter so i won't have to worry about battery too much.

all the power cycles straight through the battery, so it will still be a problem
but if you dont charge every day (which you shouldnt need to with a 12 hour battery life) then you dont really need to worry
500 charges only means 18months if you charge every day.

Umm...we don't live in 1995 anymore people. Batteries are smart enough to stop charging when they're full.

That site is very old, those issues have been fixed I think.. and besides, after that came out, a butt load of alternatives and work arounds were released.
Update My friend has had a 1st or 2nd gen 40GB and it's been working fine for about 2 years now.

This shouldn't be that much of a problem with 4G iPods since they have a true "off" state.

Um you DO know that that technology has improved since then, and ALL lithium-ion rechargeable batteries die, right?
Derrr.

Actually, in the iPod manual, it is recommended that you DON'T leave the iPod charging after the battery is full. Letting lithium ion batteries "trickle charge" after they are fully charged will significantly shorted the lifespan of the battery. This is true with any rechargeable lithium battery. Unlike ni-mh batteries, which must remain on the charger because they will drain when left unused, lithium batteries will hold a charge indefinitely. It's probably a good idea to use the iPod until the battery is about 1/4 full and then charge it - DON'T leave it on the dock when you're not using it, since it will charge via USB/FireWire or the AC power supply.
This is actually a good idea with anything that uses a lithium battery, like PDAs and cell phones. I think that laptops are slightly different, since the OS detects when the battery is full and will cut power to the battery to help maximize battery lifespan.
