Could this be a aux input on my car stereo?

My brother gave his old car stereo to me after he got a new one. I haven't gotten around to installing it yet, but recently noticed a small jack on the back that is the same size as a headphone jack (I can even plug headphones into it). Could this be a aux in plug? The stereo is a Sony Xplod CDX-L550X, if that helps.

um...i doubt it, not quite sure what that is. find the manual for it online. no way would they put an aux plug on the back of it (then again it's an xplod so who knows!)

my experience with with aux jacks is that they are stereo rca's. Should be a red and a white back there.

red and white should be for a subwoofer/amp...aux jack should just be a stereo headphone plug.

nope. rear Auxiliary is always red and white RCA. front panel AUX is 1/8th inch single headphone style

most likely one amp preout and one proprietary inli (same-brand cd changer, et al)

or two preouts.

edit liwhile this is an audio input, it won't work alone. Many ins require a DIN control connection to be connected in addition to the RCA plugs. Complementary devices from the same manufacturer (cd changers, eqs, etc.) have this DIN connection.

One easy way to tell if you have a true AUX in is there an aux source you can change to? if you can just switch back and forth between CD/Tape/Tuner, you don't have one.

I searched for a manual for the stereo, but I couldn't find one anywhere. I guess its not an aux plug, then, from what I've heard.......lisighli ligoes back to using crappy $5 FM transmitterli

While this is true. its not always the case. On my pioneer you have to turn the head deck off, Hold down on Func for 5 seconds, and actualy turn "Aux IN" on. Also, Most DIN devices actualy pass the signal through the DIN its self so you dont have to use RCA, This is how my XM tuner functions.

sell that sony CD player on ebay for like 50-60 bucks and you can get a good cd player by Pioneer or Sony with aux ins for like 130-150 bucks.

I had your exact same problem. I had a really nice sony cd player which i acutally bought not too long ago, but I never cared to check for Aux Inputs, which it didnt have. So I just sold it for 100 bucks, and bought a sweet new sony cd player with aux ins. Now I'm all set!

I have a Pioneer with two RCA's (left/right) it is indeed AUX in - there is menu option for it and it is clearly labeled (AUX-IN). Ha, IPOD in car here we come...

Man...I have a pioneer that only had aux out for a preamp. ( I loved that thing too...had to switch it out for an aiwa with aux in.

Speaking of which, if you don't mind dropping $100, get the lowest end Aiwa from CC or Best Buy - it's a good player and is the only one in that price range with the aux in (all Aiwas have them), and like any CD player they're freakin' easy to install. I had ripped out my Pioneer and put in the Aiwa in about an hour and a half before work the other day. )

As for me, I'm waiting for them to launch "ipodyour2000saturn". Seems like the next logical marketing move after ipodyourbmw.
