I lack a tape deck in my car, and only have a CD player and car lighter. As such, what would be the best way to play my iPod in my car?

Thanks!

Has anybody used this device?

If so, I'd like to hear your opinions on it. Also, I'd like to confirm if it will in fact play your iPod through your car, or if other pieces of hardware are required.

Thanks in advance!

yeah i have a belkin tunecast. I tried it with my portable CD player to see if the signal would even be strong

its horrible. not worth it in any way. I went out and bought a new car CD player with Auxilary inputs, so I get 100% sound from my iPod.

Hmm, the iTrip[=http//www.griffintechnology.com/products/itrip/]iTrip looks like a decent solution. Thanks for pointing that out.

Has anybody got any experience with this? How effectively does it transmit the quality over the radio?

Feedback appreciated...

i bought an iTrip but haven't used it yet. i am <ahem> waiting for a firewire card for my old PC before i can fill my iPod...i have an iMac but it is in storage at the moment. the reviews sure look good, though. supposedly the signal is strong.

this is what i plan to do. if it doesn't work, i am going to give up. i have a really nice CD player in my car that plays MP3's, which is almost as good as having an iPod. but not quite.

a tape deck adapter gives great quality (for me at least, i use a sony one i got with an old cd player)

all of belkins stuff blows tough shit (that's not involving wires. that's what they're a company of, they just got on the bandwagon and made every other electronic device on earth)

luckily my cd player already has the AUX input so im good to go. im thinking about doing alittle work to it though so i can hide the wire under the dash and come into the extra storage compartment my car has. nice secure place for the ipod and its out of sight.

i'm pretty sure my alpine comes with an input that you can just plug in a cord (that goes from the hp jack in your iPod to the jack in the cd player liafter marketli) and just directly links it.

how is itrip better than belkin?

rlink

21-09-2004 18:15:01

i think the best (Quality-wise) thing you can do is sell or trade in your current cd player for one with auxillary inputs to get direct sound from your ipod without going through any periphials that decrease sound quality.
anyone know of any type of dock, or holster kit for a car? i dont think id want my ipod just sliding around.

i think if you live in a decent sized city, with lots of radio signals, neither the belkin tunecast nor the itrip will work well. I dont see how they can send a stronger signal than an 11 story tall radio tower.

rlink

21-09-2004 18:56:38

well the signal wouldnt be stronger, but the transmitter would be within ~5 feet of your car antenna at all times. this is how a lot of multi-disc car changers operate. you wont get much interferance as long as you pick a frequency with a good amount of space between other stations.

nothing can beat a direct link though.

eh, ive tried it and it never came in good. but i could only choose from 1 of 4 stations.

oh well, I got my new cd player with the auxilary wire ready to go!

I've seen some good reviews for the audia-x. I've got one and I'm going to be testing it tomorrow......err I mean later today. I couldn't find it in any online stores, but I got one off ebay for $22 (shipping included).

Whats a good cheap car power adapter for the ipod? I dont need it to have line out. What about the powerpod[=http//www.griffintechnology.com/products/powerpod/]powerpod?

Also that captains chair looks nice.

I read the review on that too... I cant see how they could be all that different from each other.. Anyways I think Im gonna have to get one of these things too, I dont think I have the option of a direct line to my car stereo... Its stock and their arent any AUX buttons or settings so it prolly aint gonna happen... There is a CD button and I dont have a CD player, maybe that could be used as an Auxilary input somehow... Hmmm

hacktek

22-09-2004 01:41:43

Neversky same thing with me...my stereo is stock and there is a cd option on it, but it has no input jack and i have no idea of how to use it. If it find that out i would definately try the aux input, it i don't then i'll just stick with my casette adapter.

What do you drive? I drive a 97 Ford Taurus...

22-09-2004 02:02:42

2001 Hyundai Accent...now that i think about it, my stereo was not stock cuz i actually told the dude which one i wanted when i bought it...but still it has the cd feature i described above

2000 Cougar here, which lacks a tapedeck, and AUX input. Sounds like I'm gonna have to resort to the iTrip. I'm worried tho, because I live in a major city with lots of local radio stations nearby.

2002 Jetta here. There's a guy on one of the forums I'm on that makes in-car iPod docks for certain models. For the Jetta it happens to be integrated into the slider portion of the ashtray in the console. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure this is just for the mini versions. Either way, I plan to integrate mine into my car somehow. I'd like to try the BMW glovebox thing and get it to work with my steering wheel controls.

I haven't even started researching it yet. That's going to be alot of work, I'm sure.

I've done some testing with my Audia-X. The quality is very good. I just searched the radio for a frequency with nothing but static and set the Audia-X to that and instantly the radio went to silence. I then plugged it into the cd player i tested it with and the music seemed a little quieter then it would be playing in the car cd player (easily fixed by turning up the volume), but the audio quality was excellent. It uses a single AAA battery (1 included) and supposedly gets 8 hours out of the battery. I think I'll get some AAA nimh batteries for it.

I got it on ebay for $22 shipped from mp3playerstore.com (price on their website is $30 without shipping). They did have a bunch on there before but not at the moment.

How much do you think it would cost to get the ipod professionally installed into an 03' accord. I have and open aux port inside of the stereo console. I saw some sites on how to do it yourself but I have no clue with cars and I def. don't want to risk damaging anything.

If it's a 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo jack, all you need is an audio cable. if you want it to look pretty, that will take some time (if the jack is in the BACK of the stereo). Otherwise, pick up a cable at radioshack, plug in, select "Aux" as your source on the stereo, and play away.

If it's a pair of RCA-type plugs, you just need an RCA-to-1/8" cable, also available at radioshack.
