Hi gang, just got my 5 referrals today, and am awaiting approval! I'm psyched, as I've wanted an iPod for quite some time now.
Anyway, I figured I have some time to wait, so may as well get busy burning all my CD's to AAC format. This has left me with 2 questions
1) What software do you recommend for CD -> ACC conversion?
2) How do MP3 songs get displayed on the iPod? Is it based on the filename, or the stored ID3v1 info?
Thanks in advance for any helpful responses...

rip it into mp3, whats AAC anyway?
The easiest way to go for CD -> AAC would be through iTunes.
The best way would be to use
EAC[=http//www.exactaudiocopy.de]EAC to extract the audio from the CD securely, then encode to AAC through
FAAC[=http//faac.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=FAAC]FAAC.
As for MP3 display, I can't be sure since I haven't gotten my iPod yet, but I would assume that it will use ID3 tags, then fall back to filenames for untagged files.

i dont know my mp3 player uses id3 tags and if it doesnt have a tag or something it uses the folder name the file is in for the album name and the file name for the name, simple as that

Disastirous AAC is higher quality sound at lower file size than MP3. It's the format that iTunes Music Store sells its files.
If you're converting your CD collection, it's better to convert to AAC for something like an iPod.

Does it use ID3v1 or v2? anyone know? Can I switch between which tag it uses? I mass formatted all my mp3s id3v1 tags.. I hope it doesn't use v2.

the iPod and pretty much any MP3 player today uses id3v2. the iPod displays only tag info if your mp3s are tagged - otherwise it will tag everything as "<unknown>" and the filename will be displayed (i think - all my mp3s are tagged so i'm not positive on that). you can search by title, artist, album, genre, and composer.

It does read id3v2 but will fall back to id3v1 if the v2 tag isn't present.

Thanks for the response guys. I have a few more questions.
1) It's good to know that the iPod uses ID3/2 to display the songs. I'm wondering if this applies not just when the song is playing/displayed, but also how the songs are listed when perusing the entire archive.
2) Is there a limit to how many characters are displayed?
Thanks!

yes, the limit is the limit on the id3 tag, google for id3 tag specs to find the limit.
