I started doing some research after I decided that I wanted two LCDs. I figured out that the Samsung 710n/710n-2 is really the way to go, since it was free to begin with.
If you compare the specs of the Samsung to other 17" LCDs in the $350-$450 range, the Samsung surpasses all of them in the two more important (IMHO) specs - it has a 12ms response time (minimal ghosting - better for gaming) and a 6001 contrast ratio (which means it's brighter), compared to a 25ms response time on pretty much every other 17" LCD on the market (including Dell's UltraSharp model).
The only real downside to the Samsung is that it's analog-only...but for me that's not a problem, since I'm using both of mine on an ATI AIW Radeon 9600 with two VGA outputs.
Just FYI, since I know some people have been wanting to get rid of theirs.
