I got my 20GB iPod today and thought I'd take it to the apple store, pay an extra $100 and get a 40GB.
No dice.
I used the whole got-it-as-a-gift story, which they had no problem with, but they said that without a receipt, they couldn't take it back unless it was sold in that particular store, which it wasn't.
I then took it to meier & frank, target, the good guys and best buy and none would take the upgrade.
I guess a 20GB is just my fate.
Not that I'm whining. I mean, shit. It's a free iPod.

Compusa? They have a no receipt policy during the holidays.
Here's the part from the CompUSA website on return policy
Holiday Returns
At CompUSA, we believe in being fair to our customers. If you are not satisfied with a product you purchased from us during the Holidays (11/14 - 12/24) and you return the product with the original receipt or invoice on or before January 8, 2005, you may exchange the product or receive a refund. [b8e3055f609]If you do not have the original receipt, you may exchange unopened product for a CompUSA merchandise card.[/b8e3055f609] Items must be in new condition, with the original box, packaging, manuals, accessories, and UPC code.Opened software, games, and videos may only be exchanged for the same title.
Hope that helps. )

In general, most retail stores will bend the rules after the holidays due to the overwhelming volume of returns and exchanges coming in.
This is why gift receipts were created, but you really don't even need those.

CompUSA let me exchange mine yesterday.
Whomever answered the phone & the lady at the customer service desk both echoed what is stated above about no receipts.
However, the manager said that a gift receipt would be needed & the above policy is regarding the regular receipt... but since the lady at the desk had already started he allowed the exchange.
