Actually not just Contra, a wide selection of Konami games, it was known as the Konami code, seems like you could even put it in on MGS and something would happen, forgot what though.

Actually, the Konami code is Up-Up-Down-Down-Left-Right-Left-Right-B-A-Start. Either caveman got it wrong or he is talking about something else.

Select-start is for 2 player contra with tons of lives, it's the same code just lets you play multiplayer. But yeah, the offical code doesn't have the select in it. Oh and he put a-b instead of b-a, simple mistake.
