Cheap cases are better than no cases

I'm waiting for Christmas to roll around for someone to buy me the Contour 4G iPod case, but I needed something to protect in the meantime. I was all set to drop $25 on that stupid Belkin flip case that's not all that great, and then I found this in the digital cameras and accessories aisle in Target. It was only $4.99 and has a little velcro belt loop thingy - it's not the best but it does what I needed and it's padded pretty nicely. I cut a hole in the top for the remote/headphone access but decided to leave everything else covered. A VERY small portion of the top of the sides are exposed but other than that it's a perfect fit.

Because he wants to protect his ipod, duh. Thats cool though, only $5. It would be a pain to use if you didnt have a remote though.....all that opening and closing.....
How much bigger is it than the ipod though? Like is it a snug fit or is there alot of empty space inside?

Side to side it's pretty snug, front to back there's a little extra space. I think the 40GB would be pretty snug in it, or you could always stick in a piece of foam rubber or something similar. I thought about cutting a hole in the front, but I want protection so I can throw it in my bookbag, etc. I usually just play albums anyhow, so it works for me.

The hole in the top is big enough that I can open it while the headphones are still plugged in, and the padding just the right thickness that I can still press the skip and play/pause buttons on the click wheel without removing it. The problem with cutting a hole for the wheel is that the top flap covers up some of the menu button on the wheel. However, BECAUSE i know exactly where the wheel is in reference to the bottom of the cover flap, it makes it really easy to find the skip buttons when it's attached to my belt.

I was less concerned with accessibility and more concerned with the fact that it was only $5. )

And FYI, inferno, of COURSE it looks good without a case, but I'm more concerned with protecting it when I'm carrying it from the parking garage, etc. Dropping it while it's playing is still a bad idea, but the padding on this thing is good enough that if I knocked it off a table or something, it would be fairly well-protected.

I think I like it somewhat better than the iSkin, simply because the iSkin appears to afford NO shock protection. The Contour Showcase would provide more protection and only costs like $5 more. At any rate, I just thought I'd share.

At Fry's its $40, and it comes with the earbuds too I think. Same as on the Apple website http//store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70302/wo/B22pTTxoZPA73gUT2I92H36PahH/2.3.0.6.10

I've used the Apple remote...the clip on it really sucks and the buttons are kind of hard to press. I'm shooting for this one

http//www.engineeredaudio.com/products/remote.html

The RemoteRemote2 looks like the iTrip with the round thingy on top of the iPod, but it's not compatible with hard cases since it has to lay flush against the top of the iPod. It's RF so it's wireless but doesn't require a direct line of vision between the receiver and the remote.

That's a good solution. You definitely need to protect the iPod. I'm shocked at the prices of covers.

Have you come across an inexpensive mounting system for a car?

You could always just stick it in your cup holder, thats what I'm going to do.

I thought i was all lucky and everything finding the $40 ipod carrying case. But then i went to apple.com and they said they had 2 types the 20gig case and the 40gig case. I found it like last year before the 20 gigs came out. Do you think it will still fit?

ohhh that's nice.

Hopefully it will be available on ebay for cheaper haha (doubtful).

As for cases, if I find a ghetto looking case, so be it. But I think Pod Shield is just what I'll use until an iSkin for 4G shows up on ebay for cheaper (give it time....).

If the case you bought was made for a 3G 30/40GB iPod then it will fit the 40GB well and the 20GB loosely. If the case you bought was for a 15/20GB 3G iPod then the 40GB will not fit and the 20GB will fit not as loosely. However, the 4G 20GB is the thinnest iPod to date, so all old skins will not fit as snugly as new ones.

I want to make a duct tape one complete with cover for the docking port and opening for the click wheel AND clear plastic protection over the LCD.

That'll be my rainy day project...

call me crazy, I'm think I'm ordering the PodSleevz case.

I haven't used it or touched it, but it's all I need. I don't need a case to protect from drops, only pocket scratches.

I also plan on brasso-ing it's behind often.
