Oh Fuck, Freepay on Fox 5 News (DC)?

They are about to report on the issue of emails being sold Freepay.
They called it the Biggest Breach in Privacy Ever on the Internet in History
Both sides will be infront of the judge April 21st. US Attorney General accuses Freepay of selling "PERSONAL INFORMATION", not only emails, but personal info, and now they are asking for a National Law

Okay, it was just reported, and IT WAS ON FREEPAY
it was about the article where it was being accused of selling personal information of users (us)

This has been on the newswire for a few days now, so what's the surprise? Freepay sold our e-mails, big deal. I expected it from day 1 no matter what their ToS said. That's why I created a new e-mail account just for these sites and offers, and assumed everybody else did as well.
Or did they report anything new?

As drummer and dmorris said, who the fuck cares? I've got an iPod, a Shuffle, a Mac mini and a Game Boy Micro from these guys.... i used an email address that is not my main address. As long as they didn't steal my credit card and charge hookers on it (without getting one for me P ), it doesn't matter.
I mean, yes it's important to not have your information sold.... but we got free shit. Big deal that you get a little spam. Hell, the one email account that I never give out to anyone but friends and family, I get spam on it.
If you are that concerned, never send another email again to anyone. Never post on public forums. Don't give your email address to your credit card companies. Never sign up for any contests where they ask for your home address or phone number.
Sheesh!

they are also accused of giving out names and addresses
this is much bigger than spam in your email

Names and addresses are a matter of public record. Anybody who wants to can obtain a list of names and addresses, and trust me -- all the major marketing companies have already done that. All this gives them is targeted marketing to people who are known to shop online and take advantage of online promotions.
The only thing that concerns me is telemarketers, but the national Do Not Call list now forbids them from calling unless you have a direct business relationship with them, and honestly I've gotten maybe 3 telemarketing calls in the last 2 years, since I've been on the DNC list. I could really care less how much e-mail spam or postal junk mail they send.
So this is just a non-issue to me -- much ado about nothing.

It's amazing how ppl jes let companies push em over. Freepay has done good, but they've gotten greedy in certain situations also. I'm not going to get into an exhausted conversation about it but the privacy is there for a reason. When we start hearing about Identity Theft or something of that nature it won't be the "I don't care" attitude.
P.S. - I don't understand how freepay keeps leading themselves into stupid situations. If you gon do dirt, that you know is dirt, attempt to keep it discrete, very discrete. Shiii, I don't know why I continue to do the Freepay PS3 site, its gonna be a rough and rugged road trying to get that one out of them.

the point is that they PROMISED to keep our information private
that is the ONLY issue. They broke their promise to us. They flat out LIED.
I don't see why people are defending them.
dmorris68
28-03-2006 05:49:51
I'm not defending them. I just expected no less, and thus am not surprised and have no issue with it. If I was worried about such a thing, I would have never signed up with any of these sites. Or do much of anything else on the 'net, for that matter.

Again, I'm with dmorris. I'm not defending them. If they did something wrong, then they should pay the price for what they did.
But by saying that we really are not that concerned about them selling our names and addresses and the spam and/or junk mail we get because of it is another issue... a non issue, at least for me.

hahaha, exactly. There is a reason why I always created a SPAM e-mail addy for all of these sites. One for Freepay, one for each DIY site )
And there would be zero SPAM before signing up and then like 1k spam within a week of signing up.

unless your email provider filters it out well. its not even a problem, then. i use my personal email for EVERYTHING.
seriously... gmail is AMAZING. i get almost NO spam in my regular mailbox. of course, i have 1765 in my spam folder, but as that is automatically cleared every 30 days, i dont even have to tough it if i dont want to.

When I read about this I thought that it was hilarious. They are so strict when it comes to people breaking the rules on getting free items, even when a tiny stupid mistake is made and they hold it against you for the rest of your life, yet they sold personal information even though they said they wouldn't. Why should total strangers be expected to follow their ToS if the writers can't even follow it. What a joke.

28-03-2006 14:15:04
Well the problem here I think is not really about the SPAM mails. I think we should worry about what will happen to Freepay as this lawsuit digs in deeper. Will those of us waiting to get the gifts guaranteed to receive it?

I get the same, maybe more. I have 3 gmails accounts that all get spammed to hell daily, but gmail filters most of it out. I might get one or two a week that slide into my inbox. I've gotten over $2k from them, but it's not like they're "awesome" for doing it, all they do is provide the service, AND PROFIT at the same time. I'd like to get something for them selling all my shit.

You can act as apathetic as you want about this, but it doesn't change the fact that what FreePay did was ILLEGAL.

NO. This has been talked about like 50 times and these kind of cases take years to resolve. Freepay isn't going anywhere anytime soon. And you are all assuming they are going to be found guily. In America they are innocent until proven guilty...
