Interesting.

From the Washington Post[=http//www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/23/AR2006032300639.html]From the Washington Post

ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York's attorney general sued an Internet company Thursday over the selling of e-mail addresses in what authorities say may be the biggest deliberate breach of Internet privacy ever.

Attorney General Eliot Spitzer accused Gratis Internet of selling personal information obtained from millions of consumers despite a promise of confidentiality.

The consumers thought they were simply registering to see a Web site offering free iPod music players or DVD movies and video games, Spitzer spokesman Brad Maione said. On sign-up pages, Gratis promised it "does not ... sell/rent e-mails."

Instead of confidentiality, Spitzer said, Gratis sold access to their e-mail information to three independent e-mail marketers, and hundreds of millions of e-mail solicitations followed.

Most (if not all) of those are from the offers you signed up for, not Freepay.

Is this the same case that was settled last week or is this a new one?

Im pretty sure the one last week was the company that bought the emails getting sued. I think this is new.

i used a brand new email address for freepay. and used a different one for the offer. freepay is the only entity to ever have this email address. it was ok for a while but now i get hundreds of spam messages a day. so no not all junk mail is from the offers.

i use my gmail address for EVERYTHING. it is wonderful for filtering out spam. it clears itself out every 30 days... i have 1,614 spam emails in the junk folder. out of all of these, there may be 1 or 2 a month that go to my regular email folder as opposed to the spam folder. how many are from freepay? offers? other free sites? i really couldnt care less, thanks to gmail. mmmmm.

not saying its right to have information sold or given away, especially when we are told that it will not be, though. however, i recall MANY offers stating that our information would not leave their hands, as well.

what great business ethics

I get THOUSANDS of spam after signing up to freeipods 3 months ago. I use a certain email for it and then use a different one for offers (well it's the same but with a 2 on the end) so i could excessive spam.

The one that I used for freepay gets about 5x the amount of spam than the one does I used for offers. Go figure.

I never get more spam than normal however I noticed when I signed up for certain offers under other sites my SPAM box is now filled daily. I don't think SPAM is from FreePay at all I think it's the offers we complete - many of the offers state they share your personal info with 3rd parties.

this isn't that much of a problem if you have gmail. 99% of the spam i received never makes it to my inbox..

a lot of spam has been getting through to my inbox in my gmail account lately. it's a pain when gmail notifier pops up saying i have a message, and i feverishly click on it thinking it's my final green clearing notification and it's some crap about hoodia!
what makes me sick is how they originally said when we signed up that they wouldn't sell our info and they did. they originally had no time limit when we signed up, then they changed it to 90 days even though we agreed to something else. it's just a continuous change of the rules that doesn't sit well with me. yes, they can do it, but it doesn't make it any easier to accept. They're getting a lot of heat lately and it just makes me worried that somehow they'll shut down taking our 'free' products with them. I want my last green!!!

nytrate

well their rules say they can change the rules, so the time limit thing is not very arguable.

the privacy promise however was in place WHILE they sold their estimated 7 million user data files to Datran.

class action is possible but most likely would not be worth it

Hi,

[quote8a20a90a89]Specifically he wants, at minimum, $500 for each New York state resident the company sold out, which would conservatively work out to something around $10 million.[/quote8a20a90a89]

My only hope is that I get my Xbox 360 from Freepay before they go bankrupt from all the class-action lawsuits. It would be nice to get the PS3 also but Gratis may not be in business by then (
