I heard somewhere that there is a discount on iPods for students if you go to an Apple store. Is this true, and if it is, how much is it? Thanks...

The discount all depends on what you buy. There's also a limit to how many things you can buy (ie like 1 desktop, 1 laptop a year, or something like that). Goto apple.com and to the store link. On the right side it will say other stores, goto education. Go through it to find your school etc. For standard 20gb ipods you can get them for 269 and the 40 gb is 369. ipod photos are 469 and 569. the U2 edition is 329, and mini's are 229. everything is discounted, but there's all the ipods prices for you.

If i ever get my ipod i'll hopefully be trading it in for a 40gb

yeah their are discounts and limits.
can get the educational (school faculty) discount.
it is like 250 for the 20 gig and it is a huge help on emacs and stuff

i upgraded my free 20 gig to the 40 gig. it cost me 70 bucks plus tax. The student price on iPods is 269 and 369.

why would it matter when you can get one for almost completely free?

i have a good amount of music, prob not enough to fill a 20 gig even (well if i ripped all the cds at a good bitrate i could prob come close to 40, but would take way too much effort), but it's all the fact that i'm an upgrader. when i have something and a new version that is a little better comes out, i always want the newer one. so i figure why not just add a little and get the bigger one from the get-go.

also the fact that i plan on using mine as a portable harddrive as well. you can keep things other than music on there and i plan on backing up some stuff on it.

I don't think some people realize that the iPod can be used as a portable drive. I only have 3 gigs of music but when I get mine (i hope) I'm backing up apps, games, and software images that I have on my computer when I upgrade to the 40 gig. If you think about it, its pretty sweet! lol

Yes, this is why I'd want the extra space. I've got an old, original 20 GB iPod and I use it more for backup than for music (space-wise). I'm a Mac user as well so I can install Mac OS X on my iPod and use it as an emergency backup system in case one of my computers fails. I'm also a shareware/freeware developer in my spare time so I keep backups of my source code on my iPod as well.

I can also use it to put software updates, applications and other stuff that I might need when I visit someone (like my Dad) who might need such things. Since my Dad doesn't have broadband he doesn't stay up to date as much as he should. I can keep all my favorite apps, pictures, software updates, etc. on my iPod so that whenever I'm away from my computer I'll still have all of the stuff that I need (assuming someone else has a Mac of course).
