I just released version 0.1.2 of ICFreePod which has support for 5 Gratis Services. The original 3, plus freephotoipods.com and freehandbags.com.

You can get the new version of ICFreePod v0.1.2 from my site at http//icfreepod.drakier.com and start using the new services right away. Still working on features and additions, but this was definitely a good step toward getting ICFreePod completely finished. Just working on the Web stuff right now, and I have big plans to be able to have users display their status in signatures or on their webpages like you can see on my page. More to come soon I hope!

Check it out today! If you have issues or find bugs, please let me know!

Awesome thanks
looks like the other program hasn't been updated in a while and we got to keep current lol
These free sites keep coming left and right.

Oooooh.. right.. thanks.. I'll get that fixed ASAP.

08-11-2004 11:34:43

Ok.. just uploaded a new version. Let me know if it fixes it. I don't have any referrals to test with, so I'll need someone else to look into it for me.

Thanks for bringing that up.

Yes.. it will.. but not directly. It is saved in the XML file.

Once I get the WebStats working correctly, you'll be able to see it there too.. like on my page.. my FreeiPod is shipped, but you can still see what #'s I had on my offers.

do you have a beta version with that functionality one could play with?

is your webpage in ASP or PHP?

i don't meant to offend you in any way, but is this program completely safe? i always get suspicious of these kinds of programs. wink

Drakier

08-11-2004 16:26:49

Understandably so, and yes.. it is safe.. although if you'd have to question me over it being safe, I'm not sure what else me saying it is safe will do for you.

If you're concerned, use a program like Ethereal and just monitor the packets it sends. You'll see that I never transmit to any sites other than the ones you specify, and the gratis network sites.

But if you're up for trusting my word, you can just trust me that it is ok. If you're still not convinced, I have a long history of application development, and there are users (some even around here) who know me from my past development with Asheron's Call, and who can vouch for me.

as a matter of fact i am convinced now. after going through you site and seeing how much work you've done, thanks )

do you think you will be adding support for the offercentric offers in the future?

Drakier

08-11-2004 16:31:18

Currently the only way to pull data from a server is to use a server-side scripting language. So in order to use what I currently have online, you'd have to have a server which supported either PHP or ASP.

When I get my database all fixed up, and get it working like I'd like it to be, then I'll think about somehow making a javascript include like the AdSense from Google where you just specify the file, and some parameters, and it can display the information on straight HTML pages.

Until then, it will only work on servers equipped with PHP or ASP. Sorry.

well my server is equipped with php, my pages are just written in html...

danetix Currently Gratis has a nice WebService I can access to retrieve the status information from. I do not believe that the OfferCentric has the same kind of WebService that would make it easy for me to create the program that would work well with their system.

I won't say its impossible, because I did it with the first versions of ICFreePod using HTML Scraping and other things to parse the output and grab the data I wanted. It is not easy, and is VERY prone to problems and errors. I also currently do not have any accounts with OfferCentric and the creation of the original ICFreePod was made as I was going through the process of the freeipods.com. In order for me to even start work on OfferCentric stuff, I'd have to create an account, and go through the process there as well.. something I'm not too keen on right now. I wouldn't say for sure that I won't do it, just doesn't seem like a possibility right at this very moment.

Compfreak it is to monitor your Gratis Services status over all 5 of their current offerings. It will automatically check your status, and alert you when something changes. (like what it says on my site in the About section).

princessfrozen if your server can do PHP and you have WRITE access to files, then I have a PHP version that would work for you.

The status works by creating a TEXT file of the information submitted to it from your ICFreePod program. The same file that writes the content also can display it. It just takes different parameters. That is why you have to have WRITE access to files.. It has to be able to save the information on the drive in order for you to be able to have a record which the PHP page can read when it is requested. You'd also have to use PHP includes in your HTML which usually doesn't work too well, unless the page has a .PHPurl==http://=http:///url extension on it.

If you want to try it out, I can try yo help you out, but otherwise, I'd wait until I can possibly get my Database set up, and get some accounts created for people to test. Then you just link my page, and the rest is done for you. We'll see how I can do with it.

id be willing to try it out. my site has php and asp

Drakier

08-11-2004 16:43:10

LOL.. I don't know why some people feel it important to give me negative karma... ligrinsli I'm just trying to help out. although I guess some of you are offended by that.

danetix do you know PHP and ASP, or just that your server supports it? Also.. which is easier for you? ASP or PHP?

I don't need the current ASP and PHP tested as it is already being tested on 3 different sites/pages. Once I get the database stuff in, I'll need more people to test stuff, but as it currently is, I don't need any more testers. I can provide some development information to aid people in creating status pages for ICFreePod on their own, or I can even provide ones like I have on my page if you just want to use something already created. But in its current phase, it helps a lot if you already know PHP or ASP.

well im not very familiar with either. i can set it up provided there are directions. but its not important. i can wait till you need testers.

I got this running on 2 pcs now. At home and at work. I got up this morning and looked at my home computer and ICFreePod was showing me some really weird info. So far only thing I have shipped or even have enough referrals for is the ipod. It was showing my order as being processed on the desktop pc (which I have 0 referrals). Also showing my photo ipod having a good bit of referrals. Which is way off. I looked at the program runing at work when I got here this morning and it is showing everything correct.
Just thought I would let you know.
Also how do I reset the status of everythig in the program so it can download fresh

Drakier

09-11-2004 09:21:29

JAWheat The content should always be "fresh" after a "check now" is peformed. It goes out, collects the new information, compares it to the old information, then saves it... I'm not sure why it would display anything other than what it is supposed to. I just take the Gratis information sent to me by their webservice, and put it in the XML. I don't alter the data or anything like that. I just compare new and old. Best I can come up with is that there might have been a momentary glitch in the WebService which caused it to give you incorrect information.

If you want to start over from a fresh set of data anyway, you can simply delete the XML file (ICFreePod.xml) and when you launch ICFreePod the next time, it will ask you for all your user information again, and you can just enter the account details in. Technically, it shouldn't make a difference. There is however a problem with the WebService sometimes which causes ICFreePod not not be able to connect... like a Busy signal. It will try again however in its normal mode, and if you're trying to update your account information and it cannot connect, just click Save Account again.

Thanks for making this program, Drakier! I tried PodWatch, but it's just awful. It won't even install for me.

the program is good , but it really needs a lot of memory

you should optimize it , 23mb of memory is A LOT for this program. Internet Explorer uses 11mb and WMP 19mb

just a thought, anyway thanks

most of that memory comes from the .NETurl==http://=http:///url Framework which I have no control over. I Garbage Collect as much as I can (that makes sense) and I use very little memory otherwise within my program. I ensure that no memory is taken up by me personally whenever possible. The .NETurl==http://=http:///url Framework itself is huge. Just loading the namespace of System.Windows.Forms uses up like 12 megs.

I wish I could make it smaller, but alas, that is how .NETurl==http://=http:///url is.

princessfrozen

09-11-2004 12:28:53

so basically..microshaft sucks even more?

Drakier

09-11-2004 15:12:28

I wouldn't go that far.. .NETurl==http://=http:///url by itself is a REALLY cool thing, and it is still in its infant phase. With the price of computers and memory at a low, people don't worry about memory as much as they used to.. Microsoft included.

Overall, there are still a few minor bugs and resource issues in .NET,url==http://=http:///url but it is a strong suite, and overall, I'm pleased. I wish memory could be handled better, and that I could get rid of some of the problems, but I just deal with them the best I can.

I'm too lazy to code this stuff in C++ so that is what I get in exchange. C++ offers memory management, C# offers speed and flexibility. I like the speed and flexibility over the memory management.

yay got it running on my webpage....it is possible to put on an html page, just have to edit your .htaccessurl==http://=http:///url file (if you have php on your server and the ability to edit your .htaccessurl==http://=http:///url of course).
