I was just listening to my free ipod that I got last monday....and all of the sudden, it falls off my desk, and hits the wood floor. Now the display is totally gone, backlight is broken, and touch pad doesnt work. Apple better replace it, it fell 4 feet! Think they will? They are closed right now. I will call them tomorrow and keep yall posted.

That sucks! At least you have another one right?
Are you the person who created podwatch? Cuz if you did do you think you will add the photo ipod on there?

YOU should pay for the replacement, as YOU broke it.

they're not going to replace it, as YOU broke it. Does AppleCare have accidental damage protection? If they do, get that, wait a few days, then get them to replace it ;)

i think i might be able to help you. your ipod might not be broken. i'm sure you know that an ipod is really a portable hard drive and dropping a hard drive or subjecting it to any type of servere concussion while it's running is BAD. this can cause the data on it to be jumbled... which might be what happened to yours.
i would try connecting it to your pc to see if it still recognizes it. if it does i would try re-imaging it (i'm not sure how to do this but i know it can be done). if this doesnt work you can always try taking it apart and looking around for something out of place.
MusicMan
04-11-2004 20:44:15
I wouldn't recommend taking it apart and attempting to fix it yourself.
If I were you, I'd call Apple, and tell them that it just stopped working. No need to explain yourself. Technically, your item is still under warranty. They should fix it.

warrenty is only about manufactured defects not breakage. What I would do is not really right but Would work. It would only work if it doesnt look like it was dropped though. )

Well I am on the phone with apple right now. They are gonna replace / repair it. I failed to mention that I dropped it. ;) But still.... 4 feet... i shouldnt have broke.

Oh and by the way. I did not create Podwatch, I just help advertise it. Contact illicit. He is the author.

first of all, shut the fuck up already. you got your ipod, so stop hanging around and being a douchebag.
second, it's spelled WARRANTY. there is not one, certainly not 3 e's in that word.
TaterSalad
06-11-2004 11:16:51
Yeah. The ipod shouldnt have broke to a fall of four feet. Would you expect your cell phone to be replaced if you dropped it 4 feet within the first 2 weeks you got it?
CollidgeGraduit
06-11-2004 11:25:47
No, I wouldn't expect my cell phone to be replaced if I dropped it 4 feet off my desk. Are you THAT surprised that an electronic device would break after you drop it 4 feet?
Expecting Apple to pay to replace something YOU dropped is a little bit ridiculous... Okay, no, it's EXTREMELY ridiculous.
Santa

Is it just me or is 4 feet actually a lot for something like an iPod

On-the-go electronic devices should be built to be somewhat durable, else people would be replacing cd players, ipods, cell phones, etc every few months. But either way, Apple is going to replace / repair my ipod.

you are ripping off a good company for you own stupid mistakes, they should charge you the cost of the repair, and you were dishonest. and i bet they wont fix it once they get it as they will see that it is your fault not theirs

is four feet alot? The rate of acceleration for gravity on earth is 32 feet/s.
If you threw your ipod at the wall at 128 feet/s (87mph) do you expect it to last?

He didn't drop it for 4 SECONDS he dropped it 4 FEET!

Last time I checked.... when I drop this ball 4 feet from the ground, it doesnt go smashing into my floor at 87 mph.
CollidgeGraduit
07-11-2004 20:56:53
And last I checked, any time you knock any electronic device off your desk, letting it fall four feet to the wood floor, there's a good chance it will get damaged.
How is it Apple's fault that you're an idiot? I don't put my iPod where it will get knocked onto the floor. I keep it secured in one spot in my car. Basically, I know it's my own fault if I do something stupid, like knock it off my desk.

wow good effort but that was pretty silly.. 32 ft/s li 4 ft = 128 ft^2/s, completely different thing... a better message would have been be more careful 8)

Not to bring up an old thread, but I'd thought I'd let everyone know that I got my replacement ipod the other day. It was fully covered. (I just failed to mention I dropped it) Took about 2 - 3 weeks total turn around. I bought an iskin this time too.

Was it a 20GB or a mini?
I work at a "reputable electronics store" and we had a mini going out for service. It seemed to me that the damned thing worked fine. But just to test what I had heard about how fragile the things are we started dropping it. First from one foot, then two, etc. Pretty soon we were throwing it across the room and bouncing it off walls.
We did our best and couldn't kill it.
I am thinking that the 20GB are a bit more fragile because they contain regular ol' laptop hard drives. Any hard drive (even laptop hard drives) will crap out of they take a good solid hit.

I don't feel like arguing and I'm not taking sides....but I doubt they will replace it. However, if you'd like to increase your chances, be sure to claim you purchased the iPod rather than got it for free. x
