get a decent video card with DVI out
first off change your resolution to something really really high. Im currently on 1280x1024.
next thing, turn the brightness and contrast down, especially brightness.

my text looks pretty bad, like its not the same throughout the whole monitor, some parts are dark, some are thin and light. is this what a dead pixel is?

a dead pixel is just a pixel that does not work. just a blank dot on the screen that never changes color
video cards have ALOT to do with picture quality. if you are running it through your VGA port, then forget it.

I'm not sure what's wrong with yours, but mine looks perfect. I noticed the problem you are talking about on a few of our Syncmaster 510N's in our IT office.

yo yo, I got my samsung LCD also..... I first tried running it through a Switch Box, one of those things that you can hook one monitor to two different computers, well that didn't work so hot, but once I hooked it straight to the vid card, it works fine... the samsung 710n is Analog only, not DVI... but mine looks sharp at Analog... running a Geforce 2MX

I might switch from Sony WEGA to the Samsung because I'm hearing a lot of stores of broken WEGA's. I'm concerned that mine might come broken.. S

Clear [b4a5e9abe3c]Type[/b4a5e9abe3c] is a advanced features Display tweak in XP. Type Clear Type in Google and see what you find.
http//www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/1.htm
There's even an ActiveX tweak that will turn it on for you on that site. Having the correct driver for your monitor will always improve picture quality over a plug-n-play driver.

I'm trying to make the text darker on the samsung 710 and don't know how to do it. Can anyone help? The resolution is set at the highest with 60 refresh rate.
Brightness down to like 30? Clear Type Off?

I know this reply is WAY overdue...make absolutely sure you have your video card drivers installed, and when you've done that, press the "auto" button on the LCD. It will correct pretty much any text appearance issue, where some text looks sharper/thicker than other areas of the screen.
As far as what video card to get, remember this monitor is VGA-only, aka it's an analog display. A DVI-out card wouldn't make that much difference, and isn't worth the money if you already have a decent VGA-out video card.
I'm using an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9600 with the Samsung 17" and an NEC AccuSync 900 19", and it looks great. It's taken some tweaking with my Adobe Gamma software to get the colors where I want them, but otherwise it looks really good.
You might also try installing the .iccurl==http://=http:///url color profile for the Samsung. It should have come on the CD that shipped with the LCD.
