Laptop Change

The Gateway M320S laptop on pcs.freepay.com has been replaced with the Gateway NX200S. This was due to the fact that the M320S laptop model is no longer available on Gateway’s website.

I knowwwww! I'm trying to find out if it has a wireless card. That's one of my main reasons I was going for the laptop! ( Karen is helping me out via E-mail to complete my laptop order.

Ask Karen about what options come on that laptop.

This is my first lappie so I'm not sure what network cards are compatible with the laptop. Do you? Are these suckers easy to install?

It's actually nicer. The screen is wide which is a plus, I guess. It's better looking as well. More stylish than a standard black one. I don't really care as long as I can make it go wireless.

True, but I'm only going to need the card to be around my house. Not exactly wanting to go online out of the house. If I take my notebook out of the house, it's to preview images during photo shoots.

Gateway looks like a ripoff anyways. They have better Dells which are like cheaper lol. Gateway has this on their site, "3 - Accessible capacity varies; MB = 1 million bytes; GB = 1 billion bytes; TB = 1 trillion bytes." makes them look even dumber.

my lappie has builtin 802.11g and bluetooth ). gateway's... arent that good. but you get what you pay for. $599 or w/e for a laptop isnt going to be that good of a laptop.

I'm just going to get a wireless adapter card. I'm not sure if we can just buy an intergraded wireless card and install it ourselves. But the adapters are not even that bad. They're thin and don't stick out a lot.

Is it possible to install the intergraded wireless card? I've been looking online.

Ah, I see. I keep hearing "G" is fastest though. They're not bad of cards. I've seen really ugly, thick, long ones. Do you really mind that you'd need to use one of these? If I were you, I'd get an a/b/g card just so I wouldn't miss any hotspots, but you'd do ok with G alone.

I'd get a router that can do client mode. I like having that option.

Just don't buy Belkin. )

Additionally, the card you get may have a hidden antenna jack for an external antenna. Might be worth investing in one if you have a bad signal where you are.

Plus we get an extra .1 ghz on the processor speed. And that's not even one of the good deals that dell has. If you order in bulk for business they give you even cheaper. Gateway is overpriced and lesser quality.

Well, this would be cheaper than the gateway for Gratis. The other one has a mail-in rebate and no wireless and its 599$. Shit, why doesn't gratis just take off the windows XP operating system instead of taking off wireless. Take off anything before that lol.

Jake, do you know how long processing takes for the Cyberpower Xplorer? I've been processing since 9/1. I also noticed that "Veek" was approved the same day I was, but he already went Sent to Vendor on 9/2. Maybe because he got the laptop??

Cyberpower takes up to 10 business days to put the machine together and then they send it out. It usually doesn't take any more than 3 days to ship.

So you can probably expect it in a maximum of two weeks from the time it goes STV.

Gateway reps are sheer idiots, and what they [ic4f3ab5dff]do[/ic4f3ab5dff] know, they don't like to tell you unless you ask specifically about it.

It's not impossible that this series of laptops have such components as daughterboards that connect to the main motherboards in tiers. (Common in laptops)

If you can find the FCC ID for either laptop, I may be able to shed more light on this...

Yea, I found a site that explains pretty simply how to add it if it's possible. You just remove the keyboard, stick it in, connect it, and install the drivers. Finding a compatible one would be a chore though. I hope they just switch is back to the m320s which is back on the site. This is too much work lol.

That's about mini-pci though (I know how to add those). Your GW rep didn't [ice9a38f190]specifically[/ice9a38f190] confirm mini-pci.

In general, most specs list mini-pci. If they don't, then there usually isn't. Although if the rep said they can add a card, I'd assume mini-pci due to the likelyhood of a description error.

The thing is, what I was getting at is that perhaps GW has a proprietary wlan daughterboard card for this laptop series. I've seen stuff like that in the past, and if GW says there's absolutely no mini-pci in the laptop, that's what the card may be.

Try to pin them down on the mini-pci bit.

Yes, I totally see what you're saying. it's difficult because the nx200s must be new and it's not even listed on the damn support website. I went through all the laptops on the non-support site, and after looking at their complete specs, they all did not say anything about mini-pci. Then I looked up the same ones on the support site and they said they had wireless via pci.

wow, they definitely need to switch back to that laptop. I just noticed that it has the multi-format dvd burner? That's a handy feature for burning on the go. Do you think that gateway would let me exchange the nx200s if i order it , and pay the difference for this model with built in wireless, and a dvd burner?

No, they will not. You currently have the same problem as me. You need like the invoice to make an exchange, which gratis doesn't provide. How about you order the nx200s and tell me if it has a mini pci slot available? ;) Both the nx200s and the m320s have the same base price, so I guess you are replacing wireless with a smaller, widescreen display to make it even.

I probably will order the nx200s as soon as at least 2 of the 5 people i had do offers this past week turn green (stupid blockbuster and realarcade. blockbuster used to be instant =/ ) I'm really anxious for a laptop and I need it for notes, and getting things done w/o having to truck it back to my dorm at inoportune times.

Sometime last week like wed or something ( I'm assuming it will be like another 6 days before it credits. Mine too forever when I did it. I pretty much just gave up and was suprised to see it done one day.

Exactly...if I was assured that there would always be a laptop on the desktops site, there would be no problem with me waiting.

I received the NX200S laptop. It's totally not a bad laptop. It's safe to say you won't be able to do miracles with it, but it is a good laptop to have. The wireless doesn't bother me, I bought an adapter and it doesn't even stick out very much at ALL. Another reason why I got this laptop, is because I wanted a laptop from FDPC instead of a desktop. That way when Freepay opens a laptop site on it's own, I'll be able to get another laptop. Two laptops for free? Good to me.

Also, all you really need to do is upgrade the memory which costs NOTHING compared to what the laptop is worth.

And yep.

Can you do us a huge favor? Can you look on the box or wherever the specification is and tell us if it has a mini pci slot? Or you could always take off your keyboard and look for yourself )

Hey guys. This man seems to be a little smarter than the last guy that I talked to. He confirmed that there pretty much has to be a mini-pci slot, which is what I believed because there HAS to be one since integrated wireless is an upgrade to the base model. That means that it supports internal wireless. Cliffs He said that there is a mini-PCI slot and that he can assist me to get a compatible mini-pci card and install it myself.

yeah Veek, the nx200s looks way sexier than the mx320 model. This is good news about the upgrading! I just submitted for approval today, so I dunno how long it will be before I can order, or even if anyone will get DQed. (one of my refs already cancelled efax b/c it charged her 25.90. Do you all think that Freepay will revoke her credit?)

I submitted my account with only 10 greens. Some of my friends had already got rid of their offers because the trials were over. You should be fine. Also, it took about a day to get approve, mainly because not many people can complete that website as fast as the others.

Myself and Drumer1616161616 are currently checking out if we can buy an internal wireless card and install it. I actually opened my laptop to check and it looks like we can. I just need Drummer to look at the pictures before we can confirm this.

Also, the NX200S is way better looking than the MS320, mainly because of it's design and color. Black was just too...typical.

No soldering...There's a nice dell support site that shows how to replace or install a mini pci card. I just gotta figure out what wireless card i will order. www.mondocorp.com is a lovely site for mini pci wireless cards for gateway pcs. I will figure it out soon )

Should be all on the bottom...The Mini-PCI is on the bottom (customer service actually knew this). I made Veek open it for the good of all of us ;).

You don't remove the keyboard. Anything you need to install is done by little doors on the bottom of the laptop.

Those 2 leads that are taped down, are likely the antenna leads which extend along the inner frame of the lcd.

Just connect them to the corresponding jacks on the card, and you're good to go. )

Yea its a SO-DIMM for notebooks. 50$ on newegg and there are no rebates or savings. I don't see a need for over 768 mb of RAM for me since I will not try to make a supercomputer out of a computer that is bottlenecked elsewhere. I just need to be able to load .NETurl==http://=http:///url framework and burn cds at school and stuff. I read comparisons between the Celeron M and Pentium M and the only difference is the 50% less cache and no speedstep tech. The low Cache is a bummer since it's like the most important part, however, I think the early Pentium M's that weren't based on the Dotham core had the same specs as the Celeron M that we are getting. It should be a good computer for web, email, and average computing.

Yep...go for the ram if you can handle that external card. You don't even need an internal one if you're not gonna take it out of the house. I, on the otherhand, must have both.

i'm posting from my nx200s with my lovely wireless card installed. Now i need to locate the place for the RAM upgrade. This notebook is gorgeous and the mini-pci install took 1 minute max. I am currently uninstalling everything that came with the notebook.

D I might get the internal wireless, I'll just do some trades. What do you mean by a place for the memory? As in to install it? I remember it was somewhere in the manual...it's on the left of the notebook, the opposite side of the PCI slot.

P.S Just in case you miss it on the manual, the screen dims down after you disconnect it from the power supply. To make it brighter, hold down the Fn key the bottom left and press "F8." I thought it was going to be a problem until I figured it out. Haha. I've been learning lots of neat things about the laptop. Like how it has a tiny slot next to the earphone lots where you take out that plastic thing and insert memory cards of cameras and stuff so you don't have to use the wires that come with your camera. So great!

The SIDE of the notebook? As in, the actual side? If so, that's pretty crazy. This laptop runs soooo fast for a celeron M. These celeron M's are the EXACT same as first gen pentium M's. Wow, it beats the hell out of my pentium 4 desktop, plus I get 4 hours and 20 minutes of battery life (claimed by the battery meter in the task bar) for low CPU tasks. Seriously though, the wireless card is great. Which manual are you talkin about? I will have to open it and see. I couldn't be happier with the notebook.

I think the reason that the NX200s isn't listed on the Gateway support section of the site is b/c all the press releases they did for the model had the model number as the M250. So, I found this link for the M250 ( http//support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/M250/2900782nv.shtml ) and I'm positive it's the same computer. (When you search CNET.com for the NX200s, it brings up a video review for what looks exactly like your system w/the same specs, but they call it the M250.

Yea its 736 MB of ram. It was an EASY install...takes like 20 secs lol. I haven't really done any RAM intensive tasks in the past few days so I have yet to notice a difference. Upgrading the ram can actually save you battery power / lifetime by not causing the hd to spin as much since it would be caching a lot less. Runs without a hitch now. Pretty damn fast.

so the 256 that comes with the laptop comes as one 256mb stick? I was under the impression that it was 2 128mb sticsk (that's where I go thhe 640 total from)

Yeah, seriously. But the "processing" stage takes the longest. They build it like in 1 day and ship it out. If the delivery date is still the same, then you're good. I remember my "processing" stage was like a couple of days too.

omg, I hope I never have an issue with this laptop if this is a preview of the customer service. One rep told me that the holiday ends on the 5th and that my unit was coming from that factory (keep in mind that the other said mine was coming from the one closed until the 10th). This same representative told me there were no conflicts with shipping and that I was processing as normal, until I mentioned this Chinese holiday. Then he told me that he couldn't transfer me to a supervisor. I asked how I could speak to a supervisor, and he told me I could request tos peak to one. I'm like, "i just did..." and he said, no you asked to be transferred to one, which I can't do. I can let you speak to one. OMG, what an effing idiot. He keeps telling me the supervisor will give me the same info.

So what's the final word on this?

The supervisor repeated the date about the 10th, and that my laptop wouldn't ship out until sometime after this. Supposedly the 25 dollar credit was processed, and they're gonna be sending me a neoprene carrying case (so i can put it in my backpack), but who knows. the order number isn't reflecting such an order on the site at this point.

NO fair...I argued with like 90 customer reps and I didn't get free shit. THey called me for a survey yesterday and I gave them all 1's for customer service. I did say that the product was good, but I would never order from them again.

Yeah, I just saw the new Compaq laptop. I personally would go for the Gateway. I've heard wayyyyyy too many problems from friends and other people about Compaq. The Compaq laptop looks pretty thick in that picture, but the positive side is that it has intergraded wireless. I had to buy my own, but $30 dollars is not bad at all.

Compaq looks pretty good on the compaq site. I really like the gateway for some reason. My family only buys compaqs, and they are usually mediocre quality. I didn't worry too much about my SSN because I thought of all the job applications that I filled out when I was younger and thought it would be no biggie to take a chance again.

it weighs about the same, 5.2lbs, and is only .2" thicker than the gateway. I also believe the keyboard is more comfortable (according to other user opinions) and that it has an s-video out port. Oh, and I doubt that compaq's factories are currently closed for mysterious Chinese holidays that only some of their reps know about.

Actually regarding functionality, I think I like everything about the compaq better. The already integrated wireless, and the on/off button for it, the s-video out (if the model freepay offer includes it), the ability to turn the touch pad off, and the placement of the speakers are all better suited to my tastes than the gateway's. The gateway just lilooksli much better, IMO.

the compaq comes with 1 yr warrenty compared ti gateways 90 day.

yep...I have zero heat on my lap in contrast to other laptops that I have used where my lap is pretty much burning. Don't risk it because u dont even get a cd-rw and the gateway is goood.

yeah! I forgot to mention that. The Gateway manual says not to rest it on your lap too long because it gets really hot. It's hardly even warm. o

Guess who is on his brand new INTERGRADED wireless laptop? Haha. Meee. The installing for the card was eassyyyy, but only the connecting was a bit tricky because it didn't let me actually enter my WEP password, I had to use the key generated by my router. All is well now. It does feel a bit better knowing that the card is not there. It feels great!

Veek, I think black is to the main and the grey was to aux. If it works im sure its fine ). xlife, those laptops are awful. First off, they aren't widescreen, which is a necessity nowadays. Second, the second one is refurbished and ugly. Third, the first one has shitty cache 256kb which is what really matters. That sempron has a higher clock speed, but in effect, the celeron M will dominate that sempron's performance. The celeron, like the Pentium M, does twice as many operations per clock. I ran SuperPi test on my celeron and I was 3 seconds slower than my mom's laptop which is 3.0 ghz p4 hyperthreaded (it took hers like 58 seconds to calculate 1 million digits of pi and mine 1 minute and 1 second. My pentium 4 2.0 ghz 512 ram takes 1 minute and 47 seconds btw). The gateway that we got is by far the best out of the ones that I have seen. Congrats on urs being in production. My Digital camera is about to be shipped ), so I am excited once again. How do you live without having any money? lol

If you are running a real business, you have to order from a real dealer or wholesaler, or even better directly from the company that manufactures the product you give away.

AMD sempron's suck, and it will run hotter than a pentium / celeron M because it consumes more power. If I was gonna buy a sick PC i would go for AMD, getting either an FX-55 or X2 4800+. However, Intel dominates in the notebook market.

From the looks of ur situation xlife, the best way to upgrade your video card would be to get a free xbox 360. No point to even get top of the line at the moment when you will have a console that will keep up.

A notebook is DEFINITELY worth A LOT more. You can build strong desktops now for like 700$. I personally try to get the thing that is WORTH the most when I checkout on freepay, since they all cost me essentially the same.

Dude wireless card is 20$ lol...

And yes I do need a faster CPU. My comp can't even play back a 720p video. You can get CHEAP dual cores for like < 300$. Multitasking is the greatest. Other than that, until they write multithreaded software, there won't be a strong need for me to upgrade.
