The reference number is the same on all the apples. On FedEx.com, you can track by combination of Ref# and your Zip code. Basically, we want to see if there's one coming to our zip codes.

The one for engraved Ipods was P9282LL/A , so I'd expect this to look similar.

its the model number of the iPod being sent. It translates into a standard (non-engraved) 20GB Apple iPod.

Usually it's just to indicate what's inside. Most companies use a part # or order # for the package reference #

That specific reference number also translates into the fact that I still don't have an iPod on its way to me - 8/24 STV (and I know there are others older than me). So, I'm guessing maybe Gratis put in a bulk order and Apple is fulfilling it in some sort of order that isn't respective of our order dates - but the rest of us earlier than 9/1 have still been ordered...

One can only hope.

what I do when I get the unique match not found is I start going up in date (or down) in case there's only 2 matches and they don't happen to be on the same day... Eventually you'd hit the date that is more than 15 days ahead of the earlier one but still in the fudge period for the later one. Then you can also go in the inverse direction (now that you know the date of one) until you get more than 15 days earlier than the later one but still in the time frame of the early one...

Yeah, I agree with Stuart. Apple probably just has a big stack of iPods to ship. Apple wouldn't know (or care about) our STV dates. Hell, maybe they're all boxed up and ready to go, and Apple is just putting labels on them as they roll down the conveyor belt to shipping.

Who knows.. but the fact that someone's shipping is a good sign -- Apple wouldn't just be shipping one here and there.

Odd, When I track with the ship date of 10-13-04 (today) I get "Unique match not found". However when I adjust the date up or down I get "Not found" which is what I had been getting until today. Any ideas on what this means, or how to narrow it down

I tried the alternate track by reference page by putting in "M9282LL/A" and I found a shipment in Shanghai, China (Oct 12) going to my town, scheduled to be delivered Oct. 18.

I'm a 9/24-9/27 STV moved to 10/6 (however you want to see it).

Actually that doesn't make too much sense. From my playing with the track by reference over the past couple weeks if it shipped today, then if you search on tomorrows date up through 15 days from now - it finds it. So, if it ONLY finds non-unique when searching today and Not Found on any other day up or down - that is strange.

I'm a 9/1 as well and am not shipped. I'd know if I was because I've got FedEx InSight, and that tells you, up-to-the-minute, what you have shipped and what is being shipped to you.

I doubt Apple is randomly shipping them. I'd imagine Gratis ordered them in the order that they were processed, so it would only make sense that they are sending them out in order.

If not, that's rather careless on Gratis's part regardless of the assumption that all of them will be shipped by the end of next week.

jetleigh, did you get an email from Gratis, or were you just left to find out by checking your status page? I figure maybe they just aren't done shipping for the day, so they are probably still scanning in tracking numbers by the minnute.

My theory is that Gratis sent a bulk order to Apple, but we don't necessarily know what order those were given to Apple. I'd assume Apple is shipping out the orders in order of when they were placed. Obvously we'd assume that the orders given to Apple were in order of STV, but that's not necessarily the case. Its possible that Gratis decided they'd send 2000 orders (or whatever) to Apple, so they queried their database for 2000 orders between the oldest and the next 2000 from that point. Then the question is, did they leave them in that order, or perhaps they sorted them alphabetically (or geographically) before they gave the order to Apple. So then, Apple would have them in order of geography or alphabet instead of strictly by STV. The entire order would be within a range of STV dates, but wouldn't necessarily ship in that order...

Of course, I could be (and probably am) completely off. Out of curiousity jetleigh - what does your last name start with? What state are you in...?

Nah, I doubt they're up to 9/1. There are a few August guys that still haven't shipped. This guy got shipped early this morning based on the tracking info, so we'd probably know by now if alot of people got shipped. To see that only two people have chimed in doesn't look promising for it to be a large shipment.

The wait continues. It doesn't matter when I get mine now anyway. I'd wanted it for an 8-hour road trip I have on Friday, but that's not going to happen, so it doesn't matter anymore.

I don't think they're picking names out of a hat. If they submit, say, 1,000 orders to Apple, I can't imagine that Apple will necessarily fulfill those order on a FIFO basis. I can't imagine Apple agreeing to do so, thereby becoming essentially a Gratis distributor. That's not their business, unless, of course, it's the Apple Store.

I think the early August anomalies were caused by orders endlessly waiting at eCost. While Gratis was able to send new orders to Apple (which some were fulfilled quickly), the early August ones were stuck in eCost purgatory.

That's my wild-assed-guess....anybody?

based on everything i've read around here, i'd say there's some merit to that. i think the reason some people are getting shipped and some aren't is that some (august people) are still sitting w/ ecost or another vendor. gratis sent the next set of orders to apple, realized apple was fulfilling WAY faster, and now is sending the rest to apple. that's why some augusts are still waiting while septembers are getting theirs.

just a theory. we'll see. i was planning on waiting another month or so but with 9/8s being shipped i'm thinking my 9/15 date may be within a couple of weeks.

I then went to freeipods.com to check my status and there it displayed my tracking # as well... So I went to fedex to track it, and notice that my ipod is shipping directly from Shanghai China... Estimated time of delivery shows 10/18 which means I should have my ipod Monday! I'm so happy, thanks Gratis!

I found one coming to my zip code from the first batch being sent out of Shanghai, but called and found out it wasn't coming to me. I still followed its progress and happened to check it about an hour after it delivered. The delivery status says it was left at the door since there were papers on file and then I was able to see the address where it was delivered and knew the package was probably just sitting at the guy's door... Good thing I'm honest (and patient). So, yeah - it is strange FedEx will give out so much info, especially the actual address once its delivered. Seems to me they should hold off showing the address AT LEAST for a couple days.
