According to Harry, the Gratis representative who comes into #freeipods even now and then, the HP iPods are "first switch, first ship".

Again, these words are straight from Harry.

I hope I got in in time then... I ordered day after they came available... Either way I dont care though, by having both available now... Should speed up the regular ipods to cuz it moves others out of the way...

johantheolive

11-09-2004 15:46:57

I switched a few hours after they allowed it - about 8 or 9 EST so hopefully I'll be in a batch not too long off. My philosophy is that if I get an HP i'll just ebay it and use that money to buy an apple. what's an ipod that isn't completely apples? maybe im just weird...lol

Also, did harry say when they would start shipping (the HPs)?

I dont see difference? Who cares about a logo...

johantheolive

11-09-2004 15:53:31

Well I do. Besides, HP lost my respect some time ago. It's more about that... And the fact that HP makes crappy stuff...

parvo99

11-09-2004 16:11:19

What does HP making crappy stuff (opinion) have to do with the HP ipod? You do realize that HP doesn't even make them, right?

Neversky

11-09-2004 16:12:30

Yeah they do... They are assembled by HP thats why they are the HP ipod...

[quote2353b30cfe="Neversky"]Yeah they do... They are assembled by HP thats why they are the HP ipod...[/quote2353b30cfe]

Incorrect.
Apple assembles the HP iPods.

Neversky

11-09-2004 16:23:40

Why would apple do that? Whats the point?

BlingKing

Incorect. Little Chineese children assemble our ipods in big facotries.

Right on. 8)

So what makes the HP Ipod the HP Ipod??? If HP puts nothing into it whatsoever then why would apple just not take the credit for it?

BlingKing

11-09-2004 16:30:45

Im guessing HP buys part of the ipod and apple assembles it for them as long as they pay them.

The HP logo on the back makes it the HP iPod. They have different hard drives aswell. It is assembled by Apple.

Neversky

11-09-2004 16:33:37

So apple just gives HP their product... Says put your name on it, and sell it? What kinda since does that make??

11-09-2004 16:34:30

It makes perfect sense. Both Apple and HP get a marketing boost. It's apple's foray into the PC world.

[quote1e5869e66b="Neversky"]So what makes the HP Ipod the HP Ipod??? If HP puts nothing into it whatsoever then why would apple just not take the credit for it?[/quote1e5869e66b]

Because there are some PC users who would not by an iPod because they are made by Apple (in fact, I have a friend, that until recently, thought that iPods would only work on Macs and wouldn't believe when I said that they've been compatible with PCs for a over a year now). HP is a well known business in the PC world, and having that branding will intice some to buy an iPod who would not do so otherwise, thus getting Apple (and HP) MORE money.

There is absolutely NO difference between the two ipods. HP only had their name branded on the iPod so they can package it with their products (like their personal computers). the only real difference is the logo on the back.

11-09-2004 17:19:07

the thing is though, which one is worth more?

because i dont plan on using... if i were, id switch to HP Pod but im gonna be selling...

its all about value to me

Dark Jedi

11-09-2004 17:34:08

HP also has agreed to install iTunes on all of their PCs, so not only does Apple get more marketing for their iPods, but they get more marketing for their iTunes service as well. It's win-win for both companies.

About what time did you all change your orders to HP on Wednesday when the option was made available? I switched at about 520 EST myself, and I hope I'm on the first shipment.

I'm for sure not gonna sell my iPod. If I had a lot of money to blow, then an iPod is just what I'd spend my money on. I don't understand why someone would sell it. And even if you did, what would you spend the money on?!

I'm keeping mine too... I listen to music often since I use public transportation... And I hate using my CD player since its hard on batteries, and can only hold so many songs on 1 cd, not to mention its alot harder to navigate too... And the thing I hate the most... CD gets a lil scratched and it skips like mad, wont have to worry about scratches with an iPod

Sure, scratch a CD and lose it - $20

Drop an iPod and break it - $300

Drop an iPod that you have been waiting for anxiously for over a month and finally recieving it only to get it broken in the first week - Priceless

I could be completely wrong but I think I switched around 345 Indiana East time (which is central time in the winter, so 445 EST). At any rate, I hope to all get out that the HPods ship ASAP, otherwise I'm going to be waiting until the end of next year, because I'm an IP3 9/8.

Inferno69

12-09-2004 08:21:28

Apple and HP made a contract. Apple would let HP build their iPods and use an HP Harddrive in them and HP would have to install iTunes into everyone of their systems.

shifuimam

12-09-2004 08:52:01

Except that from everything I've heard, HP DOESN'T actually assemble the iPods. Manufacturing-wise, they are identical. There is an HP logo below the Apple and the iPod logos on the back of the iPod, and the drive is formatted for FAT32 instead of whatever filesystem Apple uses...but they're not built by HP.

At least that would be what I've heard, eh. P

JmanA9

12-09-2004 10:13:22

I switched around 530 the day they were available to switch. I don't like HP at all, but I'll settle for it, since Harry said they'll ship out next week.

btvsrocks

12-09-2004 12:55:39

So I am guessing now with the apparent 'first switch, first ship' deal, I (as an 8/10 person) would be better off just waiting for the Apple iPod eh?

Or you can switch, and freeiPods.com will send you out whichever one comes in first.

Artanis262

12-09-2004 13:05:45

Well, I heard in the freeipods chat that the way the HP thing worked was that if you switched, they would send you whatever was first available. So if you switched to an HP iPod, but an Apple iPod became available to send to you first, you would get that, and vice versa.

Hmm, there is a way to exchange the 20GB Apple ipod for a 40GB by going to the Apple store and paying the difference, do you guys think it would still be possible to do that with the HP ipods? I was hoping to switch to the 40GB when I got my 20GB but I have switched to the HP now..

I was thinking that same thing.....

If the store has both iPods in stock, then you will most likely still be able to switch.
If they don't sell HP iPods, then I highly doubt it.

Or maybe the Indy Best Buys just like me. ;)
