Hey guys,
I got some information from Harry today, in the chatroom. I know a lot of you were there, but for the benefit of those who were not there, I'll share.
--They expect nearly ALL backorders to be shipped out this week or next.
--There are NO MORE HPs being sent out. If you switched to HP, or ordered HP, you're getting an Apple. Your place in line is determined by your STV date, not switch date.
(and now the best one)
--They are no longer sending the iPods out with engraving. It cracks me up, because there were quite a few of us that didn't mind the engraving, and we aren't getting any engraving... but so many of you hated the engraving, and now you have to deal with it. lol
Anyway, that's some positive information.. enjoy!

A strange twist of fate. It's still all good news though. Except for the people that already got Ipods that were engraved. It still would not have bothered me though. Thanks for the update, I work during the day and would not otherwise have been privy to this information.

I believe I caught that greens that changed to yellows weren't supposed to be green in the first place, that was an error. They were just fixing the error.

Because with their deal with Apple, they are being sent straight from Apple's factory in Shanghai. It's a lot faster than any vendor could be with HPs.

Not suprised. HP's aren't that large in production... so there really not that much easier to get.

Suprised they changed so quickly... but a good move on their part. Keeping customers 1[b9b85182420]10[/b9b85182420]% satisfied is how they will be able to continue. If people feel 99%, they aren't as inclined.
People feel good about the iPod experience wasn't hard, worked as advertised, iPod is tradeable etc... people are very likely to tell a friend

That advertising is worth it all.
When people see a 'freeipods.com' engraving on the back, it's a turnoff. It not only removes the tradability, but makes some people feel embarassed or 'cheap', because they got it free.

If my iPod can be sold for a higher value, that I can put towards a future iPod... yea, it is better.
That means less cash I need to spend down the road. That means a Gratis, by choosing not to engrave the iPods are providing a greater quality product, and no additional cost to them.
Think about marketing
ABC Inc. sells you product 1, and resells at $100
XYZ Inc sells you product 2. It's exactly the same as product 1, except it resells at $75.
Which one would you rather have?
I know the ABC one is worth $25 to me. Because that's what I'll pay when I trade/sell it to get a better one.
IF you look at it from Gratis point of view they improved their offering by $x dollars by making this decision. It's the equivilant to an upgrade.

Thanks. So lets say I go STV tomorrow (since I went processing yesterday.) I will be added to the apple line just like all the people who ordered it to begin with; I will not be in the HP line then switch over? Bceause if there were taking the HP option off, wouldn't it show it?

A large part of it is just to say "I did it". Have you seen the number of devices that NetBSD has been ported to, just say they have lots of ports. People do the same with Linux.

Actually you can flash an iPod.
And there is reason to create linux for an iPod... new features.
Apple doesn't always implement the features of the latest iPods on older iPods. When a linux verison of the iPod software is complete you can use a linux versoin to gain those new features... at no cost.
Then when the 20'th generation of iPods have cool features, you can get them by simply downloading the linux firmware, rather than the Apple firmware. 8)
Just don't expect OGG support, since that requires more CPU than the iPod has available.

Actually, if you knew what made the iPod tick, you could do an OS for it. I think it would be crazy to write a new OS since the iPod one is fine.
But, the Linux pics are real. There's several projects that people have done with it.
Also, Engadget.com did a story a couple of months ago about putting Mac OS X on an iPod. And I'm sure someone is bored enough in trying to put Windows on an iPod.

There are still a lot of people with August STV dates that haven't shipped yet (like me, 8/12). But if they say they're going to ship all backorders within the next few weeks...thats a lot of iPods to ship out in a short period of time...
Hopefully Harry wasn't simply a "make you all feel good about Gratis" representative, and then it ends up we're still going to wait for another month.
I predicted when I started FIP that I'd have to wait until Thanksgiving to get my iPod, and right now (even with this news), I still hold that prediction.
But as long as I actually get it, I'll be happy.

Putting Mac OS X or windows is right now at least, theoretically impossible.
Both are proprietary and source isn't available. The closed would be Mac OS X, which is based on Darwin...
you could rig darwin to run on an iPod.
But never a full desktop OS. Not nearly enough power to boot within a day or so. . lol And that's assuming you had the source.
Remember the iPod isn't running a PPC or an Intel x86 processor, so you need to compile for the processor.
Rumor is XCode is being updated in Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4 to be able to code for the iPod), though that's not official.

He comes into the channel randomly. Usually I'd say about once a week or more. When he comes in, the channel goes into +m so only voiced and ops can talk to harry. PM your questions to ops. He will not respond to questions like "When will my ipod ship?", etc.

if there was not trust issues I honestly would probably consider that.
but alas I do not yet have an ipod from them and 2 I would not trust (no offense) such a transaction. no matter what we do one of us has to ship without knowing if the other really or really will ship and one of ours could be broken etc..

i didn't see where it said only "august and september" backorders..i read it said ALL backorders. and i was STV like 9/24 and then they changed my STV date to 10/6 which i hate..but bleh..i should get it maybe by early november then?

I have heard of people getting their STVs bumped up to 10/6, I haven't but I'm think that if you were an August/September STV and it strangely updated, you should still be in the 10/11-10/22 shipment

Considering theyre now shipping 1mill and up ipods a month i dont think backorders will ever happen again. The reason we went into backorders was cuz of Ecost, not Apple. Now that Gratis deals with Apple directly, no more backordering should happen. we hope =)

im a 9/20 and got bumped to 10/6 like 5 days ago, I have heard that the people that got bumped got switched to the vendor in china and should expect their iPod within this 2 week shipment.... hope this is true.

When is the chatroom? Someone needs to ask Harry what's up with the Infone credits, NO ONE who did Infone since Oct. 1st has gotten credit, no one. I am at 4 greens, and been patiently waiting for 11 days for the last one, and it seems like I am not the only one. Can someone who get to talk to Harry next time please mention this? All of us would really appreciate it.

Not true, they are shipping first come first serve and if people from 8/12-8/16 haven't changed and i haven't changed either(9/9) that 10/6 thing means nothing.
