I agree - $500 is a boatload of money (sheesh you can get a whole PC with a flat panel for that!).
With that said though, $499 is only $100 more than the 40GB (same bump in price from the 20GB - 40GB) for another 20GB PLUS a color screen AND photo capabilities. So, considering $100 only gets you the extra 20GB when bumping up to the 40GB, seems like you're getting more for your money when bumping from the 40GB to the 60GB.

The iRiver one looks a little bulky. It doesn't look "clean".

iRiver doesn't have the iPod's ease of use. People want the iPod 1.) It's cool looking. 2.) It's easy to use. 3.) It comes complete with software designed to work with it and even its own store to buy music easily.
Quite honestly, I'm surprised Apple is adding additional features to the iPod with the rumored 60 GB. The old adage KISS has always applied to Apple products. iPod doesn't really need a color screen. Showing pics on it really doesn't add much value. I just want the thing to play my CD collection conveniently.
I find it intereresting, however, that a wannabe player rips off the "i" for their name.

I think iRiver (the company) was around before the iPod. It was established in 1999. How old is the iPod?
Also, it would be alot cooler if the new 60gb iPod plays movies too, like the Archos players do. Except the battery life would stink with the hard drive spinning more often during video playback.
man that new ipod ounds awesome

wow that's neat! Asthetically, I think the iPod looks better but from the features mentioned on there, the iRiver seems a lot better. But eh...

The iPod's success is its simplicity. Once you start adding a bunch of junk it's not so elegant anymore.
