So if you create custom playlists in iTunes, do they carry over to the iPod? I know that songs will automatically get sorted by genre when imported, but I'm unfamiliar with the process of creating a custom playlist.

Hehehe.. and your sn is musicman? WHAT? j/k. Well it's not hard to create a playlist. Open itunes and click on "file>add playlist or new playlist". Name it and start choosing the songs you want and dragging them to the list. It's quite simple. I need more of your qs can be found on your pod userguide or apple.com site. )

I'm actually more partial to WinAmp, and only recently have started using iTunes. I actually assumed iPods would be coming with software that allows for the easy creation of playlists and such, but it sounds as if iTunes is really the preferably piece of software...

I'll sum up my feelings here, and sit back and watch the flames
[b9fd93efb7c]iTunes[/b9fd93efb7c][=http//www.itunes.com][b9fd93efb7c]iTunes[/b9fd93efb7c] A great player with annoying requirements (i.e. creating playlists to burn albums). Though, for quality ripping/playing/burning/organization together, it's second to none. Slow startup, but once open, fast operation.
[b9fd93efb7c]WMP[/b9fd93efb7c][=http//www.windowsmedia.com][b9fd93efb7c]WMP[/b9fd93efb7c] Its strength is in its ubiquity, and it's easy drag-and-drop tagging. For large collections, it gets unusably slow.
[b9fd93efb7c]Winamp[/b9fd93efb7c][=http//www.winamp.com][b9fd93efb7c]Winamp[/b9fd93efb7c] Winamp's all about compromise. Relatively fast, but full-featured. Somewhat cluttered initial interface, but can easily shrink. Media library is still crap, albumlist works fine until you'd like organization across multiple main directories. Visualizations are OK, but vis hasn't been cool since 1998.
[b9fd93efb7c]Foobar2000[/b9fd93efb7c][=http//www.foobar2000.org][b9fd93efb7c]Foobar2000[/b9fd93efb7c] Definitely not for the "plug-and-play" crowd, as they'll be scared by the relatively stark interface. Under the starkness, however, is a powerful audio player and management console, with highly-respected-but-little-known technology piggybacked onto it, such as ReplayGain[=http//www.replaygain.org/]ReplayGain and APE (sort of extended id3v1) tagging. Foobar can be made to look semi-pretty, as well.

For the record, I use both iTunes and Foobar.

I really like the visualization in iTunes, and the built in streaming radios are certainly a plus. I've noticed that songs seem to sound better in iTunes.

WinAmp is cool for ease of use. Also, I've got a plugin for it that uploads my playlist to my website in real time, and constantly keeps it updated with the last 10 played songs.

The thing I hate about WMP is that when you adjust the volume, you're actually affecting the overall volume for the entire computer...not just WinAmp. You need to go into the sound slider to reset this.

Audioscrobbler is awesome for this purpose as well, and has plugins for all major players.

You didn't realize Apple would package in it's own software, designed to work with iPod, in with your iPod? Now really, isn't that just a little silly? jk/jk/jk

Don't forget you can create a "smart playlist" too. Select that option and you can select specific parameters (for example, genre, artist, year, rating, etc.) and iTunes will automatically update it when your library changes. It's a nice feature.

iTunes works very well for what it was designed to do - sort your music, connect it to an iPod, and buy music from iTMS. It's ACC format is better than MP3, and it can encode in Apple Lossless which is perfect CD quality at a smaller file size.

BTW, songs aren't imported by genre. They're imported into a file system that separates by Artist then Album. You can easily sort "Artist" "Genre" "Album" "Song Title" etc. by clicking those heading tabs. Don't forget the search bar at the top of the window. It works in real time and is very fast to find a song or artist.
Perhaps you should go to Apple's iTunes site and read up what the program can do. It's go more going on there than you probably realize.
